Title: On Death and Dying
Fandom: Doctor Who
Spoilers: Waters of Mars
Rating: None
Word count: 5 drabbles with 100 words each. I win.
Notes: Nothing special, really, trying to make some sort of sense of Waters of Mars, I came back to a fic idea I've had for ages: The Doctor vs. the Five Stages of Grief. Unbetaed (and written in a hurry as I was hurtling through all those stages while waiting for for my plane), so any kind of nitpicking or concrit is love.
Fic Masterlist: Here.

No one's gonna take me alive, the time has come to make things right

- Muse, Knights of Cydonia

1. Denial

After the War he runs as fast as he can, back to his old life, trying to tell himself there's nothing wrong, he's fine. And really, what has changed? He's still on his own, still meddling in things the others would've never approved of.

It's only at nights, when his body demands rest and his mind is forced to listen to the sound of the universe that he hears and feels their absence.

He can't stop screaming for days.

Afterwards he sets cooridinates for Earth, that blue dot of hope in his life. He has to save someone. Anyone.

2. Anger

Their voices in his ear are echoing his own race's rage against indifference as he walks away, and it feels like it was only yesterday that the War ended and he found himself alone.
Time has come to Mars to create Earth's future, demanding him to stand back and watch, the only thing a Time Lord was ever really good at.

His desperation catches fire, and he stands up as a man transformed, burning with rage. He won't stand back today.

Everything dies, but not today. Time, everyone will obey him. Just this once, someone, anyone but him will live.

3. Bargaining

Time is running through his fingers with the countdown, but he won't yield.

He's stepped back too many times, has lost too many friends to look away today. Time owes him. It's wrong to save them, he feels it in his bones, the unholiness of his actions raising goosebumps.

But Time owes him.

He's lost so much, never disobeyed - until now. It's his right to take this little piece of comfort. Time burns in his veins and twists against his grip like a snake, trying to escape his changes. He won't let it win. He'll never let it win again.

4. Depression

Time snaps back into its appropriate course with the sound of a ray gun.

He sinks to the ground, and as the time lines resettle in his mind he realises how incredibly stupid he's been.
Time always wins, his teachers' voices whisper in his mind as he watches snowflakes hurtling around an empty space where an Ood stood just a moment ago, like a warning from his own future.

Time always wins, and he'll pay for what happened on Mars.

Time will catch up with him for this act, and he sees Ood Sigma on every planet, in every shadow.

5. Acceptance

He tries to ignore the chafing of disturbed time lines, the lure of history and people who would be great companions. He's better off on his own.

It's an unscheduled landing in the Alps that finally makes him stop and breathe. There's nothing but him and his demons here, the snowy silence telling him that there're things left undone that he can't ignore any longer.

He's been on the run from his own destiny ever since Mars, and he's so tired of running.

He sighs, setting coordinates for the Oodsphere. There is nothing left to do but face his future.
