You suppose being with Wash and then losing him is the reason why you began to crave Jayne’s presence. Jayne has always been so physical, whereas Wash, dear Wash, has never been able to express himself through action.

It was strange that you and Wash could even contemplate being together, let alone consider starting a family. You never really fit together well, and you suppose you should have seen it from the start.

Sure you’ve always been a deep thinker, but you were raised to believe that actions were louder than words. Growing up as you did, with your father who he was, you learned to judge a man by their actions, not by their words. And yet… Wash drew you in so easily with promises of happiness and dreams of being free enough to be yourself in his presence. You wonder what that says about you that in the end. His words penetrated your skin so effortlessly.

You’re not sure why or even if this goes hand in hand, but Jayne’s always been one to live in the moment; take each problem as it comes and not to let the future push away the now.

One of the things you’ve always liked about Jayne was his strange sense of honesty and his ability to be blunt even in situations of extreme tension. You had once thought he was just tactless and stupid, but the more and more you’ve come to know him, the more you’ve realised that that was his way of balancing out the dishonest acts that came with his job. He stated the obvious not because he was stupid, but because it was the truth. A lot of the time, the truth was the one thing people needed to hear but few would dare speak.

Wash had always been different; his words were always carefully diplomatic when he was in control of his temper. And often he didn’t even have an opinion to express in situations that needed defusing, because his head was in the clouds.

Whether it was imagining prehistoric Earth, or worrying about possible future children, Wash rarely lived for the moment; except when he was flying. You could never have accused Wash of daydreaming while he was flying; but then, he’d never focused that kind of attention on you.

You think that maybe, one of the reasons why the two of you fought so much was because he was so unable to see you. He loved you, you have no doubt, but his love was too blind to see everything you were. He often complained he never knew what you were thinking, because it was rare that you expressed your opinion through words.

Jayne has always been so completely opposite to Wash.

The first time you two copulated was purely for physical satisfaction; but you couldn’t help noticing that the entire time you were in the room, his gaze - no - his concentration never strayed from you.

He’s never had to ask you what you thought or how you felt about a situation; he could see it in your very posture.

You think that’s why you and Jayne work so well. He completely understands you in a way that Wash just couldn’t because it wasn’t in his nature. The two of you were too different.

Since his death you’ve come to terms with the dysfunction in your long gone marriage, but you’ve never blamed it on him.

And even though you didn’t work well together, the years the two of you had were some of the happiest and saddest points in your life, and that… that you wouldn’t trade for the world.

Jayne sat up on his weight bench and wipped the sweat from his eyes. Things had been tense since the Captain had gotten back, even if his ear had been reattached.

The tension was really starting to get to Jayne, and he only knew of two ways to ease tension. The first he surprisingly wasn’t in the mood for, especially since he’d just recently cleaned his sheets. That left the second: working out.

Being in the hold for long periods of time was always an interesting experience for Jayne anyways. Almost everyone had to pass through it to get to different parts of the ship, and since Jayne’s bench was in a darkened corner, he often got to see sides of the crewmates that he didn’t normally see.

His favourite moment that day had been when Kaylee had knocked on the shuttle door and Inara had answered in sweatpants! He’d never seen her in less than an only slightly extravagant dresses, and the sweats had really boggled his mind. The two women had continued to exchanged a conversation about Yoga or some such nonsense and Jayne’s attention had wandered off.

Now it was reaching dinner time and he was finally ready to stop for the day; mind you five hours of exercising with only a few respites had made him very tired. Once his heart slowed, he’d hopefully enter the dreamless world of deep sleep.

Beginning his ending stretches he reflected on his own mood and found himself rather pleased to learn the tension he’d felt earlier in the day had almost dissipated.

“It may be tamed, but it will never disappear. Like a clock wound too tight; will snap one day.”

Jayne found pride in the fact that the creepy kid’s appearance hadn’t caused him to jump this time. “And I hope you’re in the path when I do.” As much as he could say he had never liked the kid, he was beginning to get used to her.

His father had always warned him about getting used to latent dangers, but there was just something about her... He couldn’t help it; she was beginning to grow on him, almost like a tumor, and she was probably just as deadly as cancer.

“Not always deadly,” She eyed him quizzically from beneath a sheet of unruly hair. “Sometimes benign and completely harmless. Just scary looking.”

Jayne snorted.

“Big smelly man seems less red today, more tolerant. Been sampling Simon’s medicine too?”

Jayne rolled his eyes, “Don’t make a habit of sampling anything that’s been near yer brother.”

A slight grin turned the corners of her mouth. “Captain’s taking away his cooking night. Says doctor's no help if everyone dies trying to digest poison.”

Jayne felt himself chuckling. Though her speech was still a little confusing, she was making more and more sense as time went on. Also, she was quite sarcastic today, that usually meant she'd had a good day.

“Good day, very good day,” a ghostly smile wandered over her face.

The hold was silent but for the sounds of two bodies breathing as Jayne stretched.

“Jayne?” Her voice was soft as it broke the silence.

“What,” he scowled and bent to stretch his legs. He was beginning to feel his patience wearing thin. Just because she was beginning to grow on him didn’t mean he could handle much of her.

“What am I?”

Jayne paused and looked up at her hidden face. Sighing, his used his arms to heft himself up and sit on the end of his weight bench. “Whadda ya mean?”

River shrugged, looking down at her bare feet.

Jayne scratched his head for a second. “Mostly yer annoying,” Jayne saw a little bit of hope die on her face before he huffed, “Well, yer a girl, and a genius, and Simon’s little sister. I’m not really sure what ya want to hear.”

“Girl?” She seemed almost surprised by his statement.

“Yep, a girl.”

Jayne watched the cogs turning in her head for a moment before standing and grabbing his sweaty towel.

As he exited the hold he couldn’t help but look back. Her back was to him now, but her posture seemed straighter than it had before, and the room seemed just a little brighter.
