Lyrics

Matthew Good Band - "Suburbia"

You will come back
Convince yourself you can stay alive
And wait for me
And I will know what this was for
And I'll say we're leaving
There ain't nothing here at all
Another month, a year that's all
So you can tell them I'm coming
And hell's coming with me
Hell's coming with me

Someday this place is going to burn
Is your whole life in there waiting
Someday their heads are going to turn and they'll realize
They'll realize
They'll realize
You're missing

So, this probably isn't what deathisyourart had in mind when she suggested the song. ;) She mentioned it could be a Spuffy vid, or not. Since I had other Spuffy ideas to play with, I wanted this to be the not. Which meant furrowing my brow and trying to figure out what else it was, and then chopping the song up to fit the stretch I decided to aim for. With the first verse still intact, the song really does make me think of of Spuffy. The second verse, which is what's left, also made me think it, but once I got this idea I really wanted to see if I could pull it off.

It was interesting to vid because I had to decide what I wanted to say, then figure out how to work with, and not against, the song. Usually I let the lyrics do a lot of the work for me. I got to do that a few times here but there were lots of areas where I had to be firm and focus on Buffy first, song second. Not sure if it worked, but it was a fun challenge.

Tech-wise, it wasn't too complicated. Some Levels, blurs on fades, white flashes. And I don't want to mention this one other thing because if you don't notice it right away, you might not see that what I did really isn't perfect. ;D Which means you probably *did* notice it, so I will. Cause this is a project about being honest or something. In the original long pan at 1:37, Kennedy is standing in between Spike and Xander. It's not that I didn't want Kennedy in the shot--that would have been fine. She would have stood in for all the Potentials. I just didn't have time there. I needed to shorten the clip and speeding it up looked bad. So went into AE and masked her out. Quick and dirty like. Wouldnt' have worked if there wasn't such a dark background. And it's not seamless by any means. But it solved my problem and it was practice.

This is my poor tiny Buffy vid. I always think of her as the one that overcomes everything in the end. I wanted to play with what happens before the end. And I thought the sound of this song, and the inevitable flowing quality of the lead singer's voice, lent itself well to the notion of evil seeping into places and lulling you into both a false sense of security and eventual disenchantment. Buffy's been fighting a hopeless battle since the start. The First Evil is just the most recent in a long line of evils, waiting to finally break her down.

Now whether I accomplished that or not, is y'all's call. ;) So please feel free to let me know what you think of it. Feedback is heavenly. (And if I could only get it to help me clean my yard up for Spring I'd be set!)
