Had some time to kill waiting on other people to make up their minds already so I have a mid-week music meme for you! As always this is randomized iTunes style and edited only to remove songs with the title in the first few lines and some folk tunes that even my nearest and dearest probably wouldn't guess. Also, as always, it feels like there is an awful lot of old stuff here but HEY, I'M KINDA OLD SO...trust me, there are things here I would edit out if I had ANY DIGNITY left at all. I'm willing to show you what I really have on my iPod - you can suck it up and not cheat with google!
1. The Captain, Kasey Chambers
Well I don't have as many friends because
I'm not as pretty as I was
I've kicked myself at times because I've lied
So I will have to learn to stand my ground
I'll tell 'em I won't be around
I'll move on over to your town and hide
Looking for a vid to embed I found this GORGEOUS acoustic version! God, I LOVE HER SO!!! Austin has kind of adopted her...it just takes one obsessed DJ (and an indie radio station that'll indulge obsessive DJs) to turn a whole town into raving fans! Anyway, She's ridiculously talented and you should listen to her stuff. Also, this song breaks my heart EVERYTIME.

2. Vision of a Kiss, The B-52s
I wish to see your lips
Parting like the waves of silence and mystery
I've got a curious love-for you!
Hmm, can't find a vid or a copy of the song to stream but really, now that you know it's The B-52s you can probably hum the tune, yeah?
3. When You Say Nothing at All, Allison Krauss & Union Station
taffimai and and
fae_boleynIt’s amazing how you can speak right to my heart
Without saying a word you can light up the dark
4. I'm a Believer, The Monkees
valancy_joyI thought love was only true in fairy tales
Meant for someone else but not for me.
(bonus points if you know who wrote it - Neil Diamond!)
5. Hot Fun in the Summertime, Sly and the Family Stone
mcwonthelotteryEnd of the spring and here she comes back
Hi Hi Hi Hi there
Them summer days, those summer days
6. What You Know, Two Door Cinema Club
In a few weeks
I will get time
To realise it's right before my eyes
And I can take it if it's what I want to do
SO FUN! Irish Indie Dance Pop and my favorite 'OMG WHY DID I NOT KNOW ABOUT THIS BAND BEFORE" band from ACL fest last October. Also check out "I Can Talk" which is a great song with a killer vid.

7. The Kids Don't Stand a Chance, The Vampire Weekend
nandamaiA devastating backstroke
All the way from France
With shiny, shiny cuff links
A shirtsleeve to enhance
8. Rain King, Counting Crows

Deliver me in a black-winged bird
I think of flying down into a sea of pens and feathers
9.Birdhouse in Your Soul, They Might Be Giants

But really I'm not actually your friend
But I am
10. Freeze Frame, J. Geils Band

Slow-motion weekdays stare me down. Her lipstick reflex got me wound
11. Good Thing, The Woodentops
Now that we’re here
Let’s open that wine
I, I could talk to you anytime
You’ve always been at the back of my mind
Man, why haven't I listened to the Woodentops in so long. I'm putting this album on during work time today. Ha, I'd forgotten that they were on the Rough Trade label. Yeah, I'm sort of emotionally TWELVE today.

12. Teach Me About Love, Walter Hyatt
Darlin' don't walk out on me
Tryin' to teach me a lesson
Thinkin' you'll come back to a better man
Oh, LORD I may just play on YouTube all day. So, Walter Hyatt is a GOD and a founding member of the amazing 'Uncle Walt's Band' which also featured Champ Hood and David Ball. Walter and Champ are gone now and David Ball is big in Nashville but, man, they ruled my world once upon a time. This live version is from a set with Champ, Lyle Lovett, and Willis Alan Ramsey. The recorded song is much more rooted in Texas Swing but it's still a great recording (although I wish we had Champ's fiddle here rather than Champ on guitar, the song needs his bright fiddle). Lyle also covered it on his Step Inside This House album (worth checking out as it's all covers of GREAT Texas songwriters)
I wrote a little about Walter Hyatt about ten years after he died and linked to Larry Monroe's remembrance...I don't think the song links still work but I may look at fixing that ETA: YOU GUYS I WAS AT THIS TAPING. Dave and I are right there in the audience! LITTLE NEWLYWEDS RIGHT THERE! AHAHA. Some OTHER time I'll look at the other vids from this taping and see if there's a better shot of us! This taped in Studio 6A (the ACL studio) and I think it only ran to five or six episodes? Oh, WOW!

13.(The Angels Wanna Wear My) Red Shoes, Elvis Costello
beesandbrewsOh I used to be disgusted
And now I try to be amused.
14.Tainted Love, Soft Cell
gyzym and
taffimaiSometimes I feel I've got to
Run away I've got to
Get away
From the pain that you drive into the heart of me
The love we share
Seems to go nowhere
And I've lost my light
For I toss and turn I can't sleep at night
15.Don't Stop Believing, Journey
paragraphs and
taffimaiJust a small town girl
Livin' in a lonely world
She took the midnight train goin' anywhere
16. Amy, Amy, Amy, Amy Winehouse
Attract me, till it hurts to concentrate,
Distract me, stop me doin work I hate
Just to show him how it feels;
I walk past his desk in heels
One leg resting on the chair
From the side he pulls my hair.
What can I say about a glorious mess like Amy Winehouse. I hope she can reign it in and get back to making music because she's SO DAMNED GOOD AT IT. This is from her first album and I adore the fact that she gave us a tune about a woman objectifying the crap out of a guy. Plus, who can resist a line like "I know I'd look good on you" or "the way the shirt hangs off his back, my train of thought spins right off track".

17. Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow, Carole King
taffimai Tonight you're mine completely,

18.Holiday in Cambodia, The Dead Kennedys

Thinkin' you'll go far
Back east your type don't crawl
19.Three Little Birds, Bob Marley & the Wailers
blue_fjords Don't worry about a thing,
'Cause every little thing gonna be all right!
20. Night Parade, Robbie Robertson
You got lost In the crowd
The waves of people in Chinatown
Can't get behind This mystery
Do you believe everything you see
From his great Storyville LP, which was produced by Daniel Lanois (who made it into the last meme) and also featuring Sammy Llanas (of BoDeans) who I think was in the one previous to that. We like to keep things circular here at Chez Dremiel.

I mis-numbered, think of this as extra credit
21. Anthem, Leonard Cohen
The birds they sang
at the break of day
Start again
I seem to hear them say
Don't dwell on what
has passed away
or what is yet to be.
REALLY? REALLY? No one got Anthem? What if I used the chorus instead...
Ring the bells that still can ring
Forget your perfect offering
There is a crack in everything
That's how the light gets in
Okay. YOU MUST WATCH THIS! Then you should go buy his last live album. It is an INCREDIBLE performance and about as close to the transformative experience of seeing him live as you are likely to get. Is it getting hot in here? Whew.
