Think Outside The Bottle, a project of Corporate Accountability International which happens to be located here in Boston. In the USA, Think Outside The Bottle is known for lobbying to reduce the use of bottled water and to strengthen public water systems, but they do a lot of work outside the USA too, to strengthen public water systems and oppose privatization of water in developing countries.
I have some affection for Water Aid, which works with local partners. So does charity:water, which I know less well, but which does clinic projects as well as community ones.
An alternate, but deeply connected alternative: Give to an organization focussed on sanitation and toilet access. It is the deeply uncool cousin of clean water activism. Simply put: the majority of people don't have access to clean water because the water they do have access to is contaminated with human shit. But no-one wants to think about that, so these groups have a MUCH harder time getting funding and attention than those that focus on the water side of the equation.
(I'm reading a book about this right now, so I'm easily riled on the topic.)
I asked around and got a second vote for Deep Springs Int and also Population Services Int, www.psi.org, both very serious about the sustainability problem.
