In bullet points today, because why not?
  • On the recommendation of jadelennox , I spent some portion of last night and a large chunk of today reading Suzanne Collins' book The Hunger Games. It's not quite as good as Flora Segunda  but it comes darn close, and that is saying an awful lot if you are me. (For those of you who have not heard me rant about the ( Read more... )

you know, that is one of the more cheering thoughts I've had recently about this whole graduate school process. Not that it's going badly, exactly, it's just a slog. Being called "Dr." will certainly make more of it feel worthwhile after the fact.

Just for an alternate view of ArtBeat, my booth was packed all day long, and I and my boothmate were stunned by how many sales we made. I had thought I'd mostly sell two-dollar postcards, but I many several sales of over $100, as did she.

Someone else I talked to said he had been at a booth where the vendor was running out of everything form bags to business cards to actual stock.

My take on the day was that people had declared themselves a holiday from giving a hoot about the economy and were just living it up.

I didn't get out of my booth at all though, so I can't say much anything beyond my little corner of it.

that is all really good to hear, and I'm glad you spoke up about it. My point of view was largely affected by the fact that there were simply fewer vendors than in previous years. I was also a little frustrated? Alarmed? To see a couple of booths selling what I think of as "cheap plastic crap" of the type that I don't remember seeing in previous years. I'm really glad you had a good day, and I'm sorry that I didn't manage to see you while I was there.
By the way, when are you starting up drawing classes again? grin!

Oh, The Hunger Games was THE book to talk about in my YA Lit class last quarter. Everybody read it. And raved about it. If you liked it, also try How I Live Now by Meg Rosoff (if you haven't already)--same post-apocalyptic feel to it ( ... )

I also very much enjoyed The Hunger Games. It was an excellent audiobook production (as was Flora Segunda). I was amazed at how emotionally resonant it was within the first two chapters -- particularly given how immediately the narrative emphasized that this heroine was not conventionally "nice."
