Ottawa is in the throes of a full-on winter storm. This in sharp constrast to last year, when winter didn't really get going until well into January. I have nowhere I need to be today, so let it snow

She talked about keeping our "substantive" books. The larger, more colourful books as opposed to the ratty paperbacks with broken spines.
Also, stacking some of the books horizontally and adding an art piece or two does make the shelves look very...attractive. The stager herself admitted this is all about quick and dirty ways to give our house as much broad appeal as possible.
It was just like being on one of those "sell this house" shows. Except for the part where I our house is magically rejuvenated after a fun-filled half hour of spiffy home projects.
I totally understand about the book thing. I can't bring myself to get rid of books. I still have books that I read when I was 8. "Nice Bookcases" were one of the first pieces of furniture we bought when we moved into our new house.
I went through that with selling my house too, and my books are still packed in boxes in the basement. It does make a huge difference in having a house look less crowded, although a house without books is a sad thing.
I read a book called "Ready, Set, Sell!" that gave me a lot of ideas and helped a lot in making my house sell so fast. I think it's by the guy who does those one of those "sell this house" shows starfishchick mentioned. My house really did look pretty when I set it up, even though most of my stuff was packed away. Good luck!
Ooh, what other general (shareable) advice did they provide?
I think books are the soul of a house - that and warm yummy smells. I'm glad you get to keep the pretty ones out, at least.
Did they tell you to pack up all the kids stuff and pretend you have a child-free home? I've seen that on TV, and it's ridiculous. How can people manage that, I have no idea.
I just can't picture where your new house is - all i can think of for that location is a bus terminal and lots of high rise apartments. It's not a part of the city I ever went to, I guess.
Oh, I'm mailing Master DP's xmas pressie soon - I hope you don't think it's weird of me to send him something, but, I wanted to, so there. :) I was shopping for much pickier kids at the time.
The stager was pretty understand about the toys. She suggested buying an attractive storage bin that we can throw the small ones into when we have a showing. The larger ones she said were fine, just put them someplace where they aren't the first thing people see upon entering the room.
As for the location of my new house...you used to live on Richmond Rd, right? Our house is just a couple of blocks south of Richmond, near the old time-y Esso station (if that means anything to you).
OH, that's a great area! Lots of ethnic grocers within walking distance, anyway, which is something *I* look for. is it still the #2 bus that goes down Richmond to bank street to downtown to Carleton u? I lived on that bus for one summer...

You say aesthetics but that makes it seem that she thinks that books don't look nice. I must disagree!
