The best thing I did this week

This week? Sucked. Many, many reasons for that which we shan't descend into here. Suffice it to say the past five days contained more screaming than they did smiles.

So what was the best thing I did this week? Well, that'd be "making my daughter happy."

Ever since LJ's personal Transformers epic, she's desperately wanted her Animated Optimus Prime to be more like her favourite incarnation: the G1 version. We played out another epic - one that saw Optimus killed and resurrected by shattered pieces of the Allspark, which then reformed into the Matrix of Leadership. Beautiful stuff... I love the way she merges together different canons, and finds story reasons for things.

Her Optimus Prime was now, personality-wise, more like his G1 self. But looks-wise, well... the toy she owns doesn't quite fit the bill. "He doesn't have a mask," LJ groused. "I can't believe I own the one Optimus toy that doesn't come with a mask! It's really annoying."

That got me thinking. The last few nights, after LJ's gone to bed, I've been tinkering. I tried putty and aluminum foil, but neither was hardy enough to survive play-testing. Yesterday, I scouted through a toy store, looking for cheap objects made of gray plastic that I could cut up and re-shape. Last night, I spent some time re-purposing a kiddies' potato peeler with a pair of scissors, a knife, a pen and some putty.

The result? Well, I'm no Radicon TF customiser, but I think I did pretty damn well.

Not too shabby, eh? LJ was thrilled. "Daddy, that is the most awesome mask ever!" she enthused. "You're the best Daddy in the whole wide world - thank you!" I've a suspicion even stareyednight is impressed (despite her earlier accusing me of "obsessing over it").

It's a product of more ass than class, and more luck than anything else, but my daughter's Prime now has that classic G1 flavour, and that's what counts.

This afternoon: more adventuring!
