Books and Writing on a Friday

Jul 02, 2010 16:38

My TBR pile of books is out of control. Seriously. I buy books faster than I can read them, and then I wind up having books sitting there for years. I have books I bought ten years ago and never read. That so can't be healthy. So I need to weed. I need to look at the ones that have been sitting there for longer than three years and ask myself, "Are you really going to read that book?" It'll be hard, but it needs to be done.

That said, I did buy new books last night. The latest book in Mercedes Lackey's Five Hundred Kingdoms series came out, and since I had been waiting for a new one for a year or more, I had to have it. It's called The Sleeping Beauty. I also picked up two debuts - Dark Oracle by Alayna Williams (it sounds like Criminal Minds meets Greek mythology) and Red Hot Fury by Kasey McKenzie (a novel about modern-day furies...yes, please). I'll let you know how they are.

And now onto the Writing Meme questions for days 12 and 13:

12. In what story did you feel you did the best job of worldbuilding? Any side-notes on it you'd like to share?

I haven't created too many of my own worlds so I don't have much to choose from. At this point, it would be WHITE SPIRIT since it's going into the revision stage. Ghosts and Psychics in the Blue Ridge Mountains.

13. What's your favorite culture to write, fictional or not?

I tend to stick close to home with my writing so my favorite culture has been the Scotch-Irish background of the NC mountains.
