Update the Third:

Well, pretty much every document file is for sure toast. Himself managed to find one file of stuff, not fic related, of household info I had been looking through and pulled that from the ether, so. Yay, something positive.

I've been thinking back and trying to remember where the ever loving fuck I picked this thing up. I think it ( Read more... )

the great computer hijack of 2011, idek, wtf is this bullshit?

The last virus/spyware thing i picked up was hitchhiking on the back of a legit site. They can be anywhere, these days. :(

That's what I'm afraid of, /nod. I didn't google any random sites, hell, I haven't been to Mangafox or any other scan site for my manga in over a week, either, so that was out (I got a NASTY virus from OneManga about a year ago. Oh, my god that one was nasty). I'm stumped about this one, and it's a fucking doozy. We're still not sure if the second hard drive is just massively corrupted or was killed in the hijack. Either is possible, but the corruption looks to be the most probably cause. *sigh* The formatting is actually on hold for the moment, to be recommenced tonight. Himself doesn't want me using the comp until he's finished with it, so, meh. Looks like it's a couple more days of long hand writing =)

*ducks any and all potential flames*
No flames from me, but I do love book 6. But hey, we were writing fic long before 5 was published and who cares when you're writing an AU?

Have you gone onto FF.net recently? Last week I was being a slacker at work, much like right now actually, and went onto ff.net. Next thing I know, I had a MAJOR computer meltdown on my work computer. Thank whatever deity(ies) there may be that I was able to do a system restore to an earlier point and then was able to do a malware search and get rid of the 2 trojans I picked up from ff.net. I thought I had lost EVERYTHING on my work computer with the system restore, but it turned out that my files and everything were only hidden, so after 3 days of trying, I'm pretty much where I was before I caught the nasty buggers.
If this may be where yours is, I'm thinking that perhaps we should contact ff.net and see if there's any way to rectify this. It's not good for your files (did you try a system restore to an earlier point? It may not work, and you may have already done it, but might be worth a try...) but it may be able to prevent it happening to someone else...

We reset the computer back five days or so, on our first try to see if that would wipe the virus or whatever it was. I'd gotten another nasty virus about a year ago and that's how we cleared that one up. This time we went back and every document, and even things opened like documents were gone. That doesn't usually happen when we roll the computer back, so we were a little "Huh?" Then my husband tried to find all the files on the hard drives, but they seemed to be gone, even though the HD space was taken up. He spent a day on it, but couldn't find anything on either hard drive and in the end gave up and defragged everything. So. Yeah.

You know, that's a really good point about ffnet. How'd you find your files?

I ended up trying to replace the files I knew the names of and whenever I tried, it just kept telling me that the file already existed in that location, but I could not figure out a way to access it. Then I went into the control panel, folder options, view tab, and then under "Hidden Files and Folders" select "Show hidden files and folders". This allowed me to see all my files that the system restore had apparently hidden. I can't express the sheer relief I felt when they turned up, because I mostly work with documents all day - I write instruction manuals - I was about ready to vomit when I thought I had lost all the ones I was working on. I can completely understand the stomach-sinking feeling you must have had... But yeah, try unhiding the files/folders and that should (hopefully) show the files that are still taking up space on your hard drive. I don't know if it'll help your backup harddrive, but you never know. It worked for me ( ... )
