DOOT-DOOT-DOOT DOOT-DOOT-DOOT.

Feb 14, 2009 14:45

I wanted to make a really good mix for today (something well-crafted and bittersweet and indie) but I couldn't be bothered expending the energy and I'm too much of a chipper mood to listen to beautifully sad songs. Instead I've cobbled together a little something from songs I've had on my mp3 for months. Most of them are are overplayed to the point where I repeatedly skip over them, but they're my long-time absolute favourites (it's only a 1GB Creative, see) and I can't bear to replace them with something fresher. ('Cause you know the next day on the bus it'll be all shit, I'm really in the mood for... damn. :M)

Thanks to dont_floataway who unknowingly stole my Valentines image post but helped me come up with a mix title.

It's filled with tracks that everyone will (or should) have heard before, but I hope people enjoy it anyway. I am! :]

i choo-choo-choose you! | an upbeat, quick, & happy v-day mix

the pretenders | don't get me wrong*

don't get me wrong
if I'm acting so distracted
I'm thinking about the fireworks
that go off when you smile

[...]

once in a while
two people meet
seemingly for no reason
they just pass on the street
suddenly thunder, showers everywhere
who can explain the thunder and rain
but there's something in the air.Chrissie Hynde asdfghjkl; This song fills me with glee because of how not woeful it is. It's vibrant in every way and a joy to listen to. don't get me wrong / if I split like light refracted. I like how she acknowledges and imbues confidence in dizzy and awkward and uncertain feelings.

the gaslight anthem | casanova, baby!*

do you hear me late at night?
always picking at the pieces
sometimes nothing comes out right
and nothing is relieving
but every slow man's song
is a night I'd like to spend with you
just twisting the night away.

[...]

we could run all night
and dance upon the architecture
come and take my hand
I'll do the very best I can
boy, I still wanna be your man
I'm still these nervous feet and heart of stone
forget this dead man's town, I'll take you home.God, I want to be Brian Fallon's (second) wife. ;_; I have become obsessed with this song over the past week - his voice! the guitar line!

I fell in love with Ryan Adams when I was fourteen because he was a gravelly-voiced rock 'n' roll dude who sang beautiful, earthy-real love songs and now it's happening all over again eight years later with TGA. Except I guess Ryan's that crazy (miserable) first love that was unreliable and broke your heart, and Brian Fallon's the solid, happier guy that you can be comfortable with forever.

(You never forget the first one though.)

the beatles | ain't she sweet

oh ain't she nice?
well look her over once or twice
yes, I ask you very confidentially
ain't she nice?Obligatory Beatles track!

bob marley & the wailers | is this love?

I wanna love you and treat you right
I wanna love you every day and every night

we'll be together with a roof right over our heads
we'll share the shelter of my single bed."It Must Be Love", "Don't Get Me Wrong", "Friday I'm In Love", this song. They're so simple and yet so perfect and full of feeling. It's pop music at its best. (not: I know Bob Marley was/isn't "pop"-pop but it's the best I could come up with for this weird category in my head.)

huey lewis & the news | doin' it all (for my baby)

later in the evening, it's been a busy day
she lays her head upon my weary shoulder
listen to her laughing, snuggle up and say
"now I'm with you baby, the loneliness is over"

I do my best to give her love that lasts forever
it seems like everything I do I'm doing better.Oh, the eighties. This song so cheesy but I love it because I grew up on the album it's taken from, Fore! (Which also includes "The Power Of Love". Y'know, the Back To The Future song?)

counting crows | accidentally in love*

well, baby I surrender
to the strawberry ice cream
never-ever-end of all this love
well I didn't mean to do it
but there's no escaping your love

these lines of lightning
mean we're never alone,
never alone.CC are one of those bands I always forget I love to the point of breathlessness. I can go for months without listening to a song, and then I'll hear one by accident and it's like a homecoming. (Why are gig tickets THIRTY-TWO POUNDS?! Whyyyyy? :( )

just get yourself inside her (loooove) LOL.

we the kings | secret valentine

soft kiss and wine, what a pretty friend of mine
we're finally intertwined
nervous and shy, for the moment we will come
alive tonight

secret valentine

we'll write a song
that turns out the lights
when both boy and girl start suddenly shaking inside. So much unironic love for this band. So. Much. brace yourself for love, ohhhhh yeahhhhh.

kaiser chiefs | think about you (and i like it)

hold me down I'm so excited
feeling good but slightly frightened too
I feel it in my blood and I like it
I think about you, oh when I'm leaving

hold me back I'm so exhausted
never happened like we reported to
it scares me half to death and I like it.I think I put this in a mini-mini-love songs mix a while back but I can't find the entry. One of my favourite Kaiser Chiefs' songs because Ricky Wilson's voice is effing gorgeous here.

crash test dummies | swimming in your ocean

when I'm sampling from your bosom
sometimes I suffer from distractions like
why does God cause things like tornadoes and train wrecks?

when I'm swimming in
when I'm swimming in your ocean
floating aloft on creams
and scented lotions
I can get pretty side-tracked
I hope you'll understand.HI THIS IS A SONG ABOUT CUNNILINGUS AND BONING. God Shuffled His Feet -along with various Talking Heads and Simply Red albums, Paul Simon's "Graceland", Fore!- was a frequently played album in our car... and when I hit pre/early teens and realised what this song was about I hid the cassette for about a year until I got over the embarrassment. It's bizarrely sexy (Brad Robert's VOICE) but wryly humourous at the same time, I can kind of imagine it as a British comedy sketch.

panic at the disco | mad as rabbits

don't you remember when i was a bird
and you were a map?

[...]

who could ask for anymore?
yeah, who could have more?
we must reinvent love. This song makes no fucking sense, but it doesn't matter because it sounds BRILLIANT. doot-doot-doot doot-doot-doot re-in-vent loooooooooooove, re-in-vent loooooooooooove.

ryan adams | firecracker*

black birds slow and softly breaks a glass of wine
broken bluesy whisper sing to me tonight

well, everybody wants to go forever
I just wanna burn up hard and bright
I just wanna be your firecracker
and maybe be your baby tonight.Ryannnnn. I just. Don't know. There's something about the music you discovered as a young teen, y'know? I love this song (I love the album) and I can never bring myself to examine or explain why.

madness | it must be love*

how can it be that we can
say so much without words?
bless you and bless me
bless the bees
and the birds

I've got to be near you
every night, every day
I couldn't be happy
any other way.As I've said before, this song is first on my hypothetical wedding/civil ceremony playlist. 'S perfect.

the cure | friday i'm in love*

dressed up to the eyes
it's a wonderful surprise
to see your shoes and your spirits rise

throwing out your frown
and just smiling at the sound
and as sleek as a shriek
spinning round and roundAnyone who doesn't love this song has no soul. Faaaavourite.

BONUS

amanda palmer | i will follow you into the dark

if Heaven and Hell decide
that they both are satisfied
illuminate the "no's" on their vacancy signs

if there's no one beside you
when your soul embarks
then I'll follow you into the dark.Ugh. ♥
