Finally got started on my 3rd attempt (or 4th? IDK, it's been a lot of tries) at watching Friday Night Lights, since that seems to be just about the last non-AMC/HBO-show that everyone loves and I don't already watch. Still finding it extremely hard to get into, spending as much time as it does on sports and religion and sport-as-a-religion. Never

I 'ship(ped) in equal parts: Matt/Julie and Coach/Mrs. Coach, for they are both great couples, but my SUPER FAVORITE 'SHIP is Tim/Lyla. LOVE LOVE LOVED THEM. Also 'shipped Julie/Landry, ahem.
The show tends to get better at balancing the football/religion/character screentime as it goes on, so don't worry, it's not always going to feel like it's 80% football and religion. By season 2, it's mostly character-heavy, though the football aspect is always there.
I rebelled against watching the show, PUBLICLY SO, for the longest time BECAUSE it was about football, and football is BO-RING. But, man, I never even cared about that when I finally wound up watching -- and I actually started ROOTING for the Panthers, especially in the big games. Just hearing "CLEAR EYES. FULL HEARTS. CAN'T LOSE!" gets me riled up and in a mood!
