Vanity polling - MG or HYD?

Jun 20, 2007 23:29

I decided I'd have to watch one of the drama versions for the manga Hana Yori Dango as both versions seem so friggin' popular- call it my duty as a dorama fan, or just out of extreme curiosity to know some version of this story. I thought I'd post a poll in my LJ but then I figured, wider audience, why not here ( Read more... )

Not a special snowflake but... lesbiassparrow June 20 2007, 21:04:44 UTC
even though MG was the first dorama I watched and thus has a special place in my heart, I still have to say HYD is a lot better especially in terms of acting. (Barbie Hsu was a lot better in Mars than here).

Did MG come first, or Mars? I think she fell in love with Vic during shooting of MG, right?

And oh, I think I'll take Barbie in any format. She's awesomely comedic in Corner With Love but none of that was witnessed in Mars, for obvious reasons.

MG came first. She didn't hook up with Vic until Mars though...

I do agree with your friend about HYD2. I found it really... hum but that's mainly the fault of the manga so I can't even say bad things about it. Let's say there were actions in it that felt like 'plot-no-jutsu' you know. Deus-ex-machina me voilà.

Anyway, Hana Yori dango live (1 and 2) are still perfectly enjoyable. They are not the best jdrama on the market but the OTP is ridiculously adorable, the cast is mighty fine and the story very romantic and full of lalala moments ^^ (and Special Award for worst parents you'll ever witness in a drama, and that includes TW/K-dramas o_O).

Speaking of TW-drama, I saw episode 4 of Hana Kimi today.

I want Jiro. For ever. NOW.

Heh, you don't watch the angsty dramas so you don't even know how bad evil parents can be. Even Hanadan Mom is small fry :) The Evil Dad in 'Something Happened in Bali' (I have no qualms about spoiling it for you as you will never watch) literally bludgeons his grown-up son unconscious with a golf club because the son doesn't want to marry the arranged fiancee because he is in love with someone else. And then as the guy is lying there bleeding on the floor tells him that if he doesn't do what Dad wants, he is going to 'take care' of his girlfriend. (The guy ends up marrying arranged girl, of course, and a lot of angst, weeping and ultimately murders and suicide follow ( ... )

Mind-boggling. Suddenly every family I know feels a lot more functional. :P

Meteor Garden. It's a lot more cheesy (in a good way, I love it) so it might appeal to you more because of it. It's longer, so the character development is also more gradual.

I think MG is pure crack and Hanadan (and you know I adore Hanadan) less so.

Twdrama cheese is a fact I can definitely enjoy in some of the better dramas - and laugh at in the worse ones.

I haven't watched MG yet, just both seasons of Hanadan. :DDDDb . >_>;;
So I guess you should watch HYD first, but deeeeefinitely make sure to watch MG. Or vice versa. I dunno, I wasn't really helpful, was I? XDDDDDDD;;

In my opinion, Hana Yori Dango 1 & 2 are much much better dramas than Meteor Garden (don't even TOUCH Meteor Garden 2, let me warn you). The budget, the acting, the plot, the set, the casting, the episode format: everything about Hanadan makes for a better drama.

However, Meteor Garden was my very first drama ever, and it has a special place in my heart reserved especially for it. It's long (at 27 episodes) but It's endearing, and you become so emotionally attached to the characters. Vic, Jerry, Vanness and Ken play an amazing F4, and I recommend that you watch it.

Hanadan is a better drama, I can easily say, but for me, Meteor Garden is wonderful too, and stole my heart first.

I think generally jdramas come out top in terms of acting, direction etc other "quality" features. But twdramas, as lacking as they might be in those departments, they still have some weird appeal and heart or just make for really enjoyable watching. I don't know why that is. I can understand why HYD > MG in terms of quality, I kind of assumed it was like that. :)

i think i love twdramas because there is something endearinigly 'unpolished' about them, they feel more natural and possibly more genuine/sincere (even when the stories are outrageous)

I felt that way about MG and I kind of think I may feel that way about Hanakimi (will reserve judgement).

i still think TW F4 (4 tall handsome guys) fit their roles way more than the JP ones (4 small skinny guys hehe) that NY scene? cooome on! ;)

You have a definite point, both about the nature of twdramas (my first love <3) as well as about the physiques of F4 ;D!! However, have you watched Hana Yori Dango? I think Matsujun is an excellent actor, and despite his small frame, he brings Domyouji to life just as Jerry did. Also, I fell totally in love with both actors after watching the respective shows. Especially in Hanadan 2, the Japanese F4 are very very handsome too. For me, I just have to have both shows, I can't choose just one, even though I'm a bit more tied to the Taiwanese version.
