In chronological order.

Taming of the Shrew (the Zeffifefferschneffer one) *sighs* Oh, Taming. Taming, Taming, Taming. You can't just -say- on the back of the case that in the end Kate gets the better of/power over her husband unless you actually do something to indicate that in the film. You gave us a few glimpses of schemy!Kate at the beginning ( Read more... )

shakespeare, having a gay old time, queer theory, historical fiction, slash goggles, shakespeare on film, taming of the shrew, twelfth night, viola/olivia, macbeth, movies

And Ian McKellen was kind of hot. When he wasn't being overly-sweaty/drooly.

...at which points he was EXTREMELY HOT.

...but then, I am perverse.

That's a bit weird, but I can see the attraction. XD

Oh dude, your icon.

I LOVE THE LION IN WINTER! *squees*
Have you seen Becket ? Because that has Peter O'Toole as Henry, too, and incredible slashiness between him and Richard Burton's Becket. I mean...so slashy that he says things like "I loved you so much. If only you'd loved me too!" *weeps*

And if you're wondering what R & J is doing in that list...have you seen the Zeffirelli version? THERE IS A GREAT DEAL OF HOMOEROTIC TENSION BETWEEN ROMEO AND MERCUTIO. And in the Baz Lurhmann version, Mercutio dresses up in glittery stuff as a woman at one point. It's a bit odd.

No! Although the person who told me to watch The Lion In Winter also told me to see Becket, so it is next on my list.

Yes, I have! XD Nah, I understand the tension, but it doesn't really apply to the triangle thing it's headed under. Unless Juliet and Mercutio were competing for Romeo's love, but are actually in love with each other, in which case, that's weird.

Ohh, I see what you mean now XD My addled brain just saw the whole list in terms of ROMANTIC RELATIONSHIPS WITH GAY TENSION INVOLVED SOMEWHERE. XD

...now I want to write Juliet/Mercutio fic. I think that'd be kind of cute.

I've seen Latter Days. It was very cute, liked the ending very much. Not seen Get Real, though. *makes mental note of it*

Not seen Lion in Winter yet, but I MUST at some point because Postumus from I CLAVDIVS is Geoffrey, and he was a fine, fine looking man. :)

And OMG I've read that essay about the homoerotic reading of Hamlet! The triangle bit was the most interesting, especially the bit about Cassius, Brutus and Caesar being the "most compelling". I squeed aloud when I read that. MY THIRTEEN-YEAR-OLD SELF WOULD FEEL SO VINDICATED IF SHE COULD SEE THOSE WORDS. XD

Yes, do. :D
(Also: The Line of Beauty. It's a BBC miniseries with 3 1-hour long eps. I've only seen the first 2, but Alex Wyndham - who is Maecenas from ROME - plays one of the main character's lovers. It's very exciting.)

Looking him up, it seems he was also Octavius in Heston's Antony & Cleopatra. Sort of want to watch it for him, but at the same time, HESTON :|.

SO WOULD MY... SELF XD;

I'll need to keep a look-out for The Line of Beauty, then. Alex Wyndham is pretty. :D He was in the BBC adaptation of Little Dorrit the other year. I spent most of his scenes in Rome wondering just where the hell I knew I from, before remembering that IMDb is my friend. ;)

I see your dilemma. :/ I say watch it for him, and do your best to tune out Heston. (Ugh Heston. WHY MUST YOU RUIN EVERYTHING?)

OH, YEAH MY NORMAL SELF FEELS TOTALLY VINDICATED, TOO, BUT MY YOUNGER SELF ESPECIALLY. SHE HADN'T HEARD OF SLASH YET, SO SHE GOT MILDLY CONCERNED WHEN SHE SEEMED TO BE SEEING SOMETHING DIFFERENT IN THE PLAY FROM WHAT EVERYONE ELSE WAS SEEING. (MY FRIEND THOUGHT CASSIUS WAS IN LOVE WITH PORTIA - I ASK YOU!)

Yeah, I found that out too. XD (According to IMDB, Guy Henry was also in some other shit I've seen. Why is he so adorable? /random)

I actually just watched a very old JC (like, last night), which also had him as Antony, and he wasn't bad. But old!Heston? Yeuch.

FORTUNATELY I WAS ALREADY INURED TO FANDOM BY THE TIME I READ JC, AND THE BOOK WE READ BEFORE THAT WAS LORD OF THE FLIES, IN WHICH I FLIPPED THROUGH THE BOOK MADLY LOOKING FOR EVIDENCE OF RALPH/SIMON (IT'S A TOYSHIP BUT I LOVE IT!).

CASSIUS/PORTIA I DON'T EVEN. WHY WOULD ANYONE EVEN THINK THAT.

(Also Burton's Hamlet!) Yes, do! I've never read it in class - or indeed, read the whole thing - so I feel like a lot of the nuance of the performances went over my head. I'd love to hear your take on it :D

(Ooh, haven't seen that one yet. How many Hamlets have you seen?)

Haha, okay, okay! XD I actually did start reading it a few weeks ago, because most of my friends at school are in a different small school than me, and they were all reading it in their English class. And I wanted to keep up with them. I never finished it, got sidetracked by As You Like It (am I the only one who finds everyone in that play obnoxious?), but I suppose I ought to pick up where I left off.
