Thanks! I love the idea Dean is deeply distressed to have another's life taken to save his, but that John wouldn't hesitate on this for a heartbeat if it was Dean's life on the line. The difference between two men who are otherwise very much alike. And the difference between a man considering his own life and a father considering the life of his son
( ... )
Okay, this goes really, really well with missyjack's Faith story that showed up on my flist right before this. If I can just imagine this happening concurrently with that (which I totally can, given John's weirdness in Home), I can love John a little more again.
IOW, great story! I definitely see this as in character for John.
Thanks! I'm hoping to finish a much longer piece on this subject before too much longer. The lynching one kinda bumped it and isn't willing to give the posting slot back though.
Owe you email, but just doing a quick Flist check... and this is ambiguous and wrong and brilliant. Because John would NOT ignore Dean dying if he knew about it/could do something about it. *hugs*
And I absolutely agree John wouldn't have ignored Dean then if he knew about it. I think I've gone to that well 3 or 4 times now with different results. Like Riding a Bike, which dealt with John actually getting the message after being out of touch for a week on a hunt, was the one that worked best for me, I think. Probably in part because Faith was one of the first episodes I ever saw, and even while I was watching ti the first time, the strongest reaction I had in the whole show was listening to Sam leave that message and imagining, as a parent, what it would be li to hear something like that. Tapped me into John in an empathetic way from the get-go, I think.
Really good piece and very believable. It's one of those situations where you wonder "what if it were my son?". Would I be able to let darkness rule a little longer to save someone I love? Hell yes!
LOL. Thanks. I love drabbles. You can do such harsh things with them, and never have to deal with the consequences. :D
Absolutely, John would, IMO. I can see where there might be a bit of a sense of entitlement there, too ... kind of a we save so many lives, one life in return isn't too much to ask. I can see both John and Sam falling prey to this thinking, although I don't tend to think Dean would ... one of the many elements I found so strong about Faith, that he DIDN'T feel like he deserved the life he received, either from the standpoint of it being taken from the original owner or from the one of it going to him instead of Layla.
