Supernatural Fic: Slaying Demons

May 10, 2006 21:52

Okay, here is the rest of what was missing from Slaying Dragons. I'm going to call it a sequel, although I think it's technically more of a companion piece. This pretty much does what I was looking to do with the original: Now I feel like I've told the story I wanted to tell. And it gave me an absolutely fantabulous headache while I was writing it, which is either a very good sign or a very bad one, I'm not sure which.

I totally have to thank the awesome
phantomas for giving me pretty much the whole thing in a couple of really great comments/suggestions. If it doesn't work, it's all my fault. If it does, all hers.

Please share any thoughts you have.

Slaying Demons

There’s a special kind of hell reserved for sons who let their fathers down.

It’s not the kind where you wake up, and your mother’s stuck to the ceiling and on fire. It’s not the kind where you wake up, and your father’s stuck to the ceiling and on fire. It’s not even the kind where you wake up, and your little brother’s stuck to the ceiling and on fire.

It’s worse than all of those. It’s the kind of hell where you wake up, and you realize your father doesn’t really love you at all.

When you were three, you believed your father could slay dragons. And it’s true. Maybe not the kind of dragons with green scales and wings, but certainly the kind they call demons, that breathe fire and incinerate your world around you as you hold your baby brother in the front yard and pray for help from a God who lets bad things happen to good people.

That’s when you learn it’s your father who slays demons, not God. You never outgrow believing that because he proves it every time you hunt; and that’s what you need to believe in something. You need to see it; you need to know it’s real.

And someone who slays demons can de-possess himself of a demon in the name of nothing more than love.

A father’s love.

And therein lies the rub. Because you know he can. You see it in his eyes when you beg. You know he can do it - you know he will do it - because no demon can stop your father from doing what has to be done. All he needs is for you to have a little faith, and you have every faith he needs.

Faith in your father’s love.

But he doesn’t do it. The demon makes you bleed, and you bleed. And that’s when you know it’s true.

That’s your own special kind of hell, the one this demon has reserved just for you.

For all these years, you’ve thought hell was knowing he loved Sammy more than you. But you were wrong. Hell is looking into your father’s eyes and seeing he doesn’t love you at all.

Not with a father’s love.

Because if he did, the demon wouldn’t win.
