Don't see why not? Two of those are right/wrong place at the right/wrong time, the only one that might be an issue is walking the Earth for a year but yeah they could probably all do it. Well maybe not, but they'd all give it a good attempt.

I think RTD's companion defining moments were character/relationship specific--each trial reflecting the Companion's life with the Doctor ( ... )

I think Donna got kind of shortchanged here; she was just in the right place at the right time, there was no effort of will involved. The (really goddamn literal) Deus Ex Machina in s1 worked because it wasn't something that just happened; prying open the console on the off-chance that the heart of the TARDIS could help her was exactly the sort of dumb, reckless, stubborn, amazing thing that only Rose would do. And I doubt any of the other companions except maybe Rory would've lasted a month in the Year that Never Was, and Rory wouldn't have had the sheer chutzpah to troll the Master with a fake gun and risk public execution just to laugh in his face.

I'll also give a shoutout to Amy, because the whole Girl Who Remembered schtick is very her--massive trust issues, but she knows her own reality, and she will fucking bite any psychiatrist who tries to tell her it's not real.

Well, I could see Amy do any of the things RTD companions did. I'm not sure Rory would have ripped open the Tardis to get back (unless it was to get back to Amy) but he would have walked the Earth and probably touched the hand ( ... )

WHAT IF Jack had touched the hand... would he have held onto the Time Lord consciousness up until the point of death, came back again and again? :) Sorry, nothing but naughty jokes come to mind. Interesting scenario--would have have been an insane god or perhaps the model for the Greek god Zeus going back in time and bonking everyone in sight?

but I see him doing it for the sake of humanity. There is no reason to think that Martha didn't do it for the sake of humanity either, but Davies had to stress the Doctor worship.

...but I'm sure a huge motivation was because the Doctor asked her to. We'll have to agree to disagree as I think that Martha's primary intent was to save humanity, her family, the Doctor, Jack,--but she was not sure how she could do it alone. The only the way to stop the Master was the Doctor's Plan. Had it been Rory and the method of saving the world was the same--everyone chanting Doctor at the right moment--I don't see how Rory, or anyone having been given specific instructions by the Doctor, could afford to waver from the plan, although I could see Rory wrestling with the faith in the Doctor bit.

However if the Doctor had been traveling with Rory, Amy and possibly River would have been there as well, very much changing the entire dynamic of the story. Amy, Rory, the Doctor, the Master AND Melody or River:
It would have been a very different tale.
