WHAT IF Jack had touched the hand... would he have held onto the Time Lord consciousness up until the point of death, came back again and again? :) Sorry, nothing but naughty jokes come to mind. Interesting scenario--would have have been an insane god or perhaps the model for the Greek god Zeus going back in time and bonking everyone in sight?
but I see him doing it for the sake of humanity. There is no reason to think that Martha didn't do it for the sake of humanity either, but Davies had to stress the Doctor worship.
...but I'm sure a huge motivation was because the Doctor asked her to. We'll have to agree to disagree as I think that Martha's primary intent was to save humanity, her family, the Doctor, Jack,--but she was not sure how she could do it alone. The only the way to stop the Master was the Doctor's Plan. Had it been Rory and the method of saving the world was the same--everyone chanting Doctor at the right moment--I don't see how Rory, or anyone having been given specific instructions by the Doctor, could afford to waver from the plan, although I could see Rory wrestling with the faith in the Doctor bit.
However if the Doctor had been traveling with Rory, Amy and possibly River would have been there as well, very much changing the entire dynamic of the story. Amy, Rory, the Doctor, the Master AND Melody or River: It would have been a very different tale.
I think both characters would have the same goal. The main difference between Martha walking the Earth and Rory walking the Earth is faith in the Doctor. Martha agreed to the Doctor's plan because she had faith in the Doctor.
I don't think that Rory has that much faith in the Doctor and I'm not sure that things wouldn't have worked out slightly different. Rory doesn't strike me as one who trusts the Doctor and although he would grudgingly agree to do it, I think he might also do it his way rather than strictly following the Doctor's plan. It's an interesting comparison being they are both in the medical field and thus more inclined to heal and less inclined to inflict harm. Still, I think Martha was more geared toward doing things the Doctor's way while Rory may have been taken a less "pro" Doctor line.

And if faith is the key, then Rory might have failed. Although the Doctor told Martha that she had to convince people to say his name, the method of convincing people who had no hope and no confidence that the Master's captive could save them had to come from Martha and Martha alone. I imagine to convince the people of her own sincerity and determination she did what physicians, and therefore nurses always do in dire situations where people need care. Rory the Nurse would have done little different in caring for individuals, so he possibly would have gained their trust the same way. Therefore I very much agree that Martha's faith in the Doctor was the key to her success. It is strongly suggested in the episode, and stated outright in the novel that people had faith in Martha. But would Rory have chosen to tell stories about the

Rory would totally have walked the Earth--but he would've done it for Amy. For humanity too, yeah, but Amy would be what kept him going when the going got tough.
The way I see Martha's plotline is that she totally did it for humanity--for her family and friends, but also for the whole human race--by means of the Doctor. She sees him as an agent of salvation. And the interesting thing about the s3 finale is that really, the Doctor does fuckall to save anyone, he's in a damsel role the whole time--distant idealized love interest providing motivation for the hero, empty vessel for the sparkly superpowered plot device
