Recombinant DNA can be used to insert a specific gene of choice into the plasmid of a bacterium by the use of restriction enzymes. Restriction enzymes cut out certain parts of a DNA sequence by palindromic patterns, leaving behind sticky ends. This method can be used to cut open the plasmid to leave sticky ends and also to selectively cut out genes
