January 10. I walk over to see how Skip and Penk are faring. I find only a smoky foxhole, with charred remains of a sleeping bag and a cracked edge of a rosary. They’re gone, blown to heaven by a mortar shell. Malark kneels in the snow beside me, pawing desperately, trying to find a fragment of his friends, something to hold on to, something to cry
