Yesterday, I hung out with one my friends and noticed a book on her table called, Fast Food Nation.  She said she had to read it for a class called Family Ecology.

I opened the book to a random page and it contained a discussion about the history of franchising.  One sentence stated that General Motors started the franchise movement in1898.  Because ( Read more... )

actually, gm began in 1897 with the founding of olds motor vehicle company. they built their first oldsmobile that year and started with capital of 50,000, quite a lot for the time. wikipedia doesn't check it's sources and since anyone can post, it's often inaccurate. just trying to be helpful!!

Buick was the core of GM. Oldsmobile was a completely seperate company until Buick bought it. Well, GM might have bought it. I'm not quite sure when the GM corporate shell got control of buick. But if the author of the book meant to say oldsmobile he should have.

ps, in 1898 they merged with old gasoline engine works and the first factory was built with more to come that year, thus the start of the franchise.
