Padlocks, Bumping and Caution Tape.

Super Dork Time. I need a lock for my new job, so I can keep a locker in the backroom for my stuff while on and off duty. So I dug out my combo locks from my time at Chabot and their art department, though I couldn't find one of them. One of the locks is a very pretty purple one from Master Lock, and while looking at it right now I noticed there ( Read more... )

Looks like a combo of mushroom pins and slack in the space between the two pin segments. I'd say that it might be more resistant, but certainly not bump proof. A well-cut bumping key should provide sufficient energy to push the modified pin up. I would think that the mushroom head would be a bigger assistance to bump resistance than the extra spacing would be. It certainly makes picking and/or raking a lock harder in my experience.

Bottom line, 4x more resistant means it takes 15-20 seconds to open your lock instead of 1-5. Sorry to be a buzzkill, but I don't see anything in that design that makes bumping really suck, and it doesn't provide any more real protection against picking or bumping than mushroom pins.

On the upside, it's probably a better lock not only in design, but in construction and every bit helps. Unfortunately almost all mechanical locks have some severe problems inherent to the design that renders them pickable/bumpable.

So in other words I just need to install laser and issue identity chips to everyone who's authorized to enter my living space?
