Serenity jitters

I have to say, I am totally dreading Serenity.

I am not, generally, a fan of Joss Whedon. I think he's a horribly overrated mid-range talent. Buffy was off-and-on for me, and the fact that it really was better than most shows offered on prime-time network TV when it came on says more about the dire state of prime-time network TV in 1997 than it ( Read more... )

You're not the only one who doesn't really care about Joss' stuff. You and me both. Sadly, theogferret makes me watch this silly stuff, as well as a lack of anything better to fall asleep to at 9 in the morning.

But look at your group of friends. You can avoid it in the theater, but eventually someone's gonna make you watch it. You may as well go see it all big and flashy before you have to listen to the standard scifi/fantasy fanfare about how it's not the same as it was in the theaters.

Hey man, you were the one talking about seeing it Friday. :-) I actually wasn't really planning on seeing it this weekend. Although, I am thinking I want to try to go on Sunday now.

I never thought I'd find anyone else who agreed with me about Resurrection being the best of the Alien films! My friends take my avowed opinion on that score as carte blanche to ignore everything else I say too, on the basis that I'm obviously mad. But hurrah! I am no longer alone.

I do think Angel is the best Whedon show, though - mainly because it is the only one to have just gotten better and better throughout its run. I actually have mixed feelings about Firefly, in that, while it's obviously got a lot going for it, I think Whedon seriously misjudged how much bar-raising he could get away with: while it's great for the fans, with all its many characters and subtleties I just don't see how it was meant to appeal to a casual viewer.

I thought I was the only one who overall liked Angel better than Buffy.

I honestly care not one whit about Joss Whedon's stuff. But the trailers for Serenity at least look interesting, and seeing as I know I'm going to get dragged to see it, I'm trying to summon some interest.

Well, given your fondness for Alien:Resurrection, I question how much my film tastes parallel yours (I thought A:R was an abomination, even though I like Jeunet's other work). However, I am a big fan of Firefly, and I was quite satisfied by Serenity. If you liked the show, I think you will like the movie. My principal concern is for the people who haven't seen the show, for whom I don't think the movie will have as much resonance.
