Picspam: Houses in the street where I live

Anyone here interested in architecture? Please have a look through the pictures I took today while testing my new camera. All those nice houses are in the street where I live. Each similar in style, yet each individual and different. And so many nice details. In comparison how boring that one modern house is looking! No nice details at all ( Read more... )

What lovely pictures - the details are fabulous. Are they mostly apartment buildings rather than individual houses? I'm glad they are now getting the care and attention they deserve.

Yes, these are all apartment buildings. Usually four flats on each floor - two with windows to the front (street), two to the back. These standalone houses are very typical for this area, while in other parts it is just house on house in a long row, without any breaks in between.

Some that are at a streets corner do have shops in the ground floor.

They got reconstructed in a way because they used to have the toilet outside the flat - you needed to go into the staircase and half a stair down and there at the landing was the toilet door to a small cubicle. No water toilet. Now we have bathrooms inside the flats of course, and I guess the layouts changed a bit to make smaller and bigger flats.

There is a different part in Dresden, where I could go and photograph individual houses that are also gorgeous. Where the rich people live ;) I shall do that next time.

I love older world architecture (early 20th century to way, way back) and Dresden is such a charming city. You are exactly right... the details and craftsmanship of the older buildings is stunning, making the new building look ugly and bare by comparison. It appears to be cheap and careless because no consideration was given to matching the city's overall architectural style. They wouldn't have had to duplicate all the fine details to make it fit in better. They could have just made the roof and general shape of the building (facades) similar to the older structures. What a shame. However, it's wonderful that Dresden's old glory is being preserved and restored. Lovely! (And very nice photos. Do you do anything poorly?)

First, thank you for the praise for my photographing skills! I think they have massively improved since the new camera. I hated the old greyish pictures for quite a while now. Time to do something about it ( ... )

These are wonderful! Yes, when I look at older buildings in my area I see architectural details that simply aren't added anymore. It's a shame.

Thank you! Yeah, I guess your city also has a few nice old buildings. If they are not demolished to build another skyscraper. I wonder what people of the future will think of our buildings!
