A garden?

Since we're not moving this summer, I've been pretty excited about growing a garden this summer. My husband has said he wants to and we've talked about it, but I'm pretty sure he's not as excited as I am. I'm sure he's thinking I'm pulling him into another project that he'll be taking care of. I work from home and jog 3 times a week during lunch ( Read more... )

I've always wanted a garden but never had time to actually create one. I need to just pay someone to make me one lol and I take care of it!
My grandpa and dad both have did gardens before but they had HUGE gardens. Like fields full of veggies... Squash, tomatoes, okra, greens and cabbage I know for sure. Also watermelons and pears (pear trees have been there forever).
Good luck on your gardening adventure!

We have a community organic garden that's literally right behind our house. Essentially if you get your hands dirty and participate you get to reap the benefits of it and usually only a handful of people (including my husband, not even me, ahah) actually care for it so we can a pretty good amount of food. But last year most of it got eaten by stupid ground squirrels. We did everything we could think of to keep the animals away but we couldn't figure how to keep the squirrels out and we were left with barely nothing. So I've got no real advice in terms of gardening since I don't actually partake in it, but I would say makes sure it's very animal proof and also don't wait too long to eat your food. We tend to wait a while and then it's all gone.

I had a garden for the first time last year and I loved it. It got a little bigger than I had planned because I wanted to make sure we would have enough stuff to make it worthwhile. I had tomatoes, green beans, lettuce, bell peppers, and banana peppers. One big mistake I made was planting too many seeds, I didn't think they would all grow and do so well so we ended up with a lot of veggies. I did notice the seeds I started inside did better than the ones I put straight into the ground. I guess that should have been common sense on my part but it was my first garden so I didn't think it made a difference. I had the kids help with it and it was not only fun for them but a good learning experience as well. Good luck with yours!

Yes, bell pepper I should add that too. My husband wants to do water melon, but those go crazy...so I dunno. Did you start your seeds with moist papertowels? How long did you leave them inside before putting them outside?

I didn't use moist paper towels, I just used the sectioned containers, like you buy flowers in (I'm not sure what they are called). And some good potting soil with fertilizer in it. I kept them inside for about 5-6 weeks before putting them outside.
