I don't think we did either... although as much as I thought Ben was going to off Charlie, I think Ben's mommy issues is what kept him from pulling the trigger. If he had killed Penny, Charlie would have grown up without a mother... much like Ben did.

It's the same line of logic that kept Ben from killing Danielle.

Don't forget, the island can move. It might have been closer to Egypt at some point.

If Widmore loved the island so much, why did he frequently leave it and have a child with a woman who didn't live on the island ( ... )

I guess i keep thinking that the island moves through time but remains geographically in the same place. But it does actually move so i guess it could have been much closer. And i always forget that it exits in Tunisia. Which is another point. Tunisia isn't exactly in the Arctics yet Ben needed that huge winter coat when he left the island? Maybe he didn't know where it was going to exit.
