Hey again everyone, I posted a few days ago saying I was starting to take care of myself. well, I've been cutting down most suagry foods, and trying to eat healthy. Problem is, when I went to the supermarket I couldn't think of anythink to eat that wouldn't send my BS right up high. I ended up buying veg and fruit, crisps, bread and curry ( Read more... )

Byetta may help. You might want to talk to your doc about it.

Crisps and bread might not be the best choices, though if the bread is whole grain, that's going to be better. Whole grains (whole wheat, brown rice, etc) in general have more fiber and absorb more slowly than white flour, white rice, white/regular potatoes (sweet potatoes are better) etc so they will spike most people's sugars less.

Cheese, nuts, meats, plain or sugarfree yogurt, cottage cheese and popcorn are food options that might not raise your blood sugar as much, but you have to experiment and see what works for you. Those are all things I tend to have to take either no or little insulin for.

If you have an overactive thyroid, have you seen a doctor about that? If you're gaining weight though, it's probably underactive, not overactive, and there are tests for that and then you can take extra thyroid hormone in pill form. It's a really easy treatment, especially relative to anything diabetes-related.

Thats pretty much what I am eating. However I can't seem to make any good meals from it and also I find it all boring :/

And I do have an overactive thyroid, I was diagnosed a few years ago. For some reason it makes me constantly hungry and energetic, making me burn up energy really fast. i'm supposed to loose weight, but because I'm always wanting to eat its a vicious circle >.

Hmm, I had an overactive thyroid back in highschool, but I lost weight even while eating more than normal. Once I went on the meds and it slowed down I wasn't as hungry, but then I started gaining weight. I would make sure that your meds are working properly before resigning yourself to being hungry for life.

Kimothy above mentioned Byetta, but if you are type 1 (or type 2 on insulin)you might want to look into Symlin. I just started, and although it is too soon to tell how much its helping my blood sugars, I am feeling full for a lot longer in between meals.

Good Luck

Tbh, I wasn't taking my thyroid tablets much, and also according to my doctor, my thyroid problem just went away. I mean wtf. So im not on thyroid tablets no more (I think they were carbonmicole or something) I'm now just on ramipril for my kidneys. And I'm a type 1. And nothing seems to be availible over here (UK)

with an overactive thyroid, its not just your appetite that gets you into trouble with blood sugar. any extra hormone in your system raises your blood sugar. i was diagnosed with graves disease same time as type 1 diabetes 3 years ago. at the beginning there wasn't really much of a problem. but my endocrinologist stopped my anti-thyroid meds last july, and my thyroid hormone levels steadily rose and rose, and my sugars got a lot harder to control. by november, when she finally ordered Radioactive Iodine, to destroy my thyroid, i was having trouble keeping my sugars under 200. so you most definitely want to get your thyroid problem under control before you worry about what kinds of food to eat ( ... )
