Snow -- and sunshine!

Dec 10, 2013 15:56

We awoke to a snowstorm in Washington this morning -- but it seems to be more benign than the weatherman predicted. We got 4-5" of wet snow, and the thermometer crept above freezing by noon; now it's melting away quite rapidly. (Which is a good thing, since the day after tomorrow [Thursday] the freezing weather is forecast to return, dropping to 18 ( Read more... )

I'm glad that the deep freeze is holding off for the moment. Over here the weather forecasters keep forecasting freezing cold, torrential rain, gloom, doom and general brass monkey weather. The fact that it has failed to live up (or down) to these predictions has cheered me up enormously. Some splendidly weird weather recently (late on Sunday afternoon the sky turned what can only be described as shocking pink for a few minutes). We haven't had enough snow to build a snowman for some years now, but you never know...

So you share my sense that all our weather is bizarre these days. Storms are huge, or piddling. Predictions -- ever more "scientific" -- seem constantly over- or under-estimated. We're more aware of it all, but no less in thrall to the impacts! (As I wrote 2 weeks ago, our guests from Florida here in Washington were amazed by the cold weather. They used to live in Massachusetts, where winters are worse than here -- but the "now" weather here was aberrant...)

Enjoy the snowman....but I think it will get worse though. It will be progressively colder later on in the week. High only in the 20's on Thursday. Another snowstorm (well a mixed bag) on Saturday in to Sunday.

I'm pleased to introduce you, Iz, to my LJ pals here! I'm specially fond of Aussies ("Ozzies" to you!); Joanne and I were fortunate enough to spend a month last year going around your wonderful country -- loved our all-too-brief visit to Melbourne!

I'm secretly hoping for snow, but not a blizzard XD It's good that the storm turned out to be benign :)
