I have never been more invested in an election before, and it is pretty much solely because of the propositions this time around - proposition 8 in particular ( Read more... )

It would almost be enough to move, should it pass.

My country is a country where gay marriage has been legalized a couple of years ago, seven and a half years ago to be exact.

We're not going down in flames and hellfire.

WHY, WHY would someone elses marriage threaten your own? Do the people who vote yes on 8 let their neighbor's marriage influence their own? Are they afraid their children will grow up corrupted if someone in the family gets a divorce?

I mean, I'm big on a couple of other issues as well, and while I'm pretty extreme in my pro-abortion views I get where the anti-abortion people are coming from.
I simply do not get why people feel so threatened by gay marriage.

Exposing your children to people with a colored skin will not turn them African-American or Latino. Exposing your children to older people will not cause them to age faster. Why does opening kids' eyes to the existence of gay people automatically make them gay?

I totally envy those who live in places where gay marriage has been legalized. I think the States are on their way there, but we have a ways to go, and crushing Prop 8 is just one step of many. Seriously, it's been legal for that long and it's not like the sanctity of marriage has been destroyed.

I completely agree with you. I can understand anti-abortion arguments, even if I'm hyper pro-choice, but there's just no way I am willing to hear anti-gay marriage arguments. There's a difference in a law that allows for something such a granting a right, and one that takes AWAY a right, like Prop 8. I can't believe people want to legalize this bigotry and discrimination.

Why does opening kids' eyes to the existence of gay people automatically make them gay?

You hit the nail on the head. I wish I had an answer for that.

I know, right? I think California is such a largely liberal state that I don't think it (should) pass Prop 8, but I'm still sick to my stomach and worried about the what ifs.

The problem is that all of the places we think about in CA are liberal, and everything else is conservative. I remember looking at who won 2004 by county, and LA was blue, and so were most of the places along the SIlicon Valley, but after that, all red.

Everything that isn't a big huge city in California seems to be red, yeah. Drive a few hours outside LA into the farm country and you get red and conservatives like you would anywhere else. But such a huge amount of the population reside in the cities, so you have huge chunks of blue like LA, San Diego, San Fran, etc. with all the voting power.
