California and Proposition 8

Nov 03, 2008 23:30

I have never been more invested in an election before, and it is pretty much solely because of the propositions this time around - proposition 8 in particular.

For those out of state, prop 8 will legally amend our state constitution to define marriage as being between a man and a woman.

I like to think of myself as being open to all sides of any discussion, even if I disagree wholly and completely. This is the one and only thing I cannot and will not understand the other side of. One: religious reasons. I see nothing in this that has to do with religion, plus, shall we remember the separation of church and state? Two: teaching about marriage in schools. Marriage was never TAUGHT in schools to begin with, and what's everyone so afraid is being taught? That kids will know gay people exist, that they can get married? Gay marriage EXISTS, whether it's happening in California or not, how is this a bad thing to teach children? Three: the sanctity and definition of marriage. What sanctity? The idea that people can get their marriages dissolved, as if it never happened? People can get divorced, people can get married two, three, twelve times? Blame those who cannot commit, who get their marriages annulled in twenty-four hours, do not condemn those who just want the right to marry the legal adult they love.

commadoremarie said it best:

I think the California Supreme Court said it best in Perez v. Sharp:

If [two people] choose to face this possible prejudice and think that their own pursuit of happiness is better subserved by entering into this marriage with all its risks than by spending the rest of their lives without each others company and comfort, the state should not and cannot stop them.

Proposition 8 is rooted in prejudice, and it should be stomped out as such. Please, please California - do not declare state-sanctioned bigotry. Do not amend our constitution in the name of homophobia and hatred. We must vote "no" on Proposition 8.

politics ahoy!
