Born again

We can only suppose it is the fact that he was, er, utterly destroyed that would explain how slow his return might be.

Steerpike is back, half amnesiac - he only remembers the Mansion in patches. Specifically, he remembers faces.  A woman, good to him, beautiful and sullen.  Something about a watch. And he might place a few faces, without ( Read more... )

Him again? Lynn pauses and looks at him, frowning a little. Something's different now.

He notices - he’s even rather amazed at how pretty she is, and wonders at the very terrible haircut. It is… well, she would be so much more beautiful with long hair, he muses. He tries to picture her in a dress, though it’s not really of any period, maybe remotely Edwardian, and decides she would be so very lovely in it.

All the while, he is drumming an odd sort of beat on the table - one that really doesn’t mean anything.

After a little while, she comes back to the table with the sandwiches--still pretty much the only thing she can cook, except for what Merlin taught her, and that requires more ingredients and more lead time. "There, ser."

"Many thanks," he says, looking at the sandwich with relish - though it may well be his first.

"Will you sit?" He seems to find difficult to accept the idea that she would not.

"Yes, ser." She would have anyway; she doesn't tend to stand unless she really feels its required of her. She sits across from him and helps herself to one of the sandwiches.

He takes a bite, and makes an appreciative sound - as he swallows it, he realizes how hungry he was.

"This is wonderful," he says, between bites. "You make a fine sandwich, Lady Lynette."

Aww, man. "Not lady. Just Lynette," she corrects. But the praise is good--her psych-sets are humming happily.

"Nevertheless, the food and your companionship are doing me good." He musters a smile. "Thank you."

"Yes, ser." Mmmmmm.

"Do you usually work in the kitchen?" Interestedly.

"No, ser. I'm a pilot and a mech. I fix things."

He looks at her blankly. "I'm sorry, what did you say?"

"I'm a pilot. I fly ships. And I'm a mech, too, a mechanic, so I fix things. Mostly ships, but Ser Childermass gives me things he finds."

The concept is difficult to grasp. THere was no harbour in Gormenghast, and it's not like he has many memories anyways.

"Ships that fly?" He stops at the beginning of her sentence.

Lynette nods. "Yes, ser."

He just gives her a blank stare. “How?”
