Born again

We can only suppose it is the fact that he was, er, utterly destroyed that would explain how slow his return might be.

Steerpike is back, half amnesiac - he only remembers the Mansion in patches. Specifically, he remembers faces.  A woman, good to him, beautiful and sullen.  Something about a watch. And he might place a few faces, without remembering names or circumstances. Friend, or foe? That is the question.

He is wearing jeans and a petroleum blue turtleneck, and a tuque - how he got them is anyone’s guess - he might have picked them off a clothesline somewhere. He is hiding in the bushes, by the Mansion - for he has not seen his face, and so he is horrified at the idea of showing himself, though his face is quite whole indeed.

He remembers much less of Gormenghast - only that it was a place where a man called Swelter terrorized him, and that he is atrociously disfigured, though he doesn't know why - that latter part, as we said, completely wrong.

Yes, guests of the Mansion. Have a lost Steerpike, who does not quite know who he is.

He does not even remember his own name.

T: Hiatus over, here's a Steerpike for your pleasure. He still hates his typist.

steerpike, laurel, rosencrantz, re-introduction, lynette
