What has he got in his pocket? (An introduction)

Jun 19, 2007 21:36

A hobbit has appeared quite literally out of thin air in the main room of the mansion. Bilbo hadn't meant to arrive here. He was taking a leisurely walk, with his ring in his pocket and Sting on his belt for old time's sake, when he had seen Lobelia coming down the path. With his usual good timing he put on his ring and dove under a hedgerow. ( Read more... )

Armand tries not to make assumptions, but the very short person puzzles him. "Monsieur? Are you lost?"

((Armand likes greeting people. Anyone else you'd like to see?))

"Possibly." He doesn't sound terribly upset about it.

"I can try to help, if you'd like untangling." He hesitates, considering, and then bows. "I'm Armand St. Just."

Bilbo bows back but not very deeply since Armand is just a human and not an OMG!elf. "Bilbo Baggins at your service."

Okay, oh dear. Here's someone who can sense the Ring, whatever the state of his being in relation to it, who caught wind of it the minute it showed up and who suddenly has very good reason to exist. He's gone for looking affably humanish: caution is in order when just one little murder saying hi around here tends to get him promptly group-pwned by hordes of Elves, and anyway he likes pretending to be friendly.

"Greetings, Master Hobbit."

Bilbo bows a little. "Hello. Bilbo Baggins at your service, sir."

Typist: I wasn't certain if you got the last one.

Baggins. "Is that so? I'll tell you if I ever have need of it." He smiles widely: all's in good fun. "Another newcomer, then?"

T: I did. I'm sorry, I'm notoriously slow at tagging. :/

"Yes. I don't know how I got here but it doesn't seem that bad just odd."

And Sauron honestly can't be the only person here with a reason to want the One Ring, can he? Although the gentleman doesn't yet know that he has reason to want it. It suits the gentleman to be visible at the moment, having just seen the hobbit become visible, himself. He is dressed in fine and tasteful gold and green, which might suit a hobbit well enough, and he is wearing a politely amused expression. "Are you a wizard, or something else entirely? You seem a trifle too mortal to be one of my kind, and yet not a man--oh, you are right to call it a bother, because this is very vexing indeed!"

Bilbo has to take a moment to comprehend all of that. "I'm not a wizard. I'm a hobbit."

"A hobbit!" He doesn't actually know what a hobbit is, and so the conclusive tone in his voice is more from deciding that it doesn't matter than from understanding. "You must certainly tell me all about them!"

"Ah. We mainly live in Eriador. Some people call us halflings, perhaps you've heard that name? Hobbit is what we call ourselves. And... umm..." Bilbo is a little uncertain what the gentleman wants to know. He's also trying to categorize the gentleman but it's difficult.

*looks around, confused* Where is the bother?

"This place is the bother. I'm not supposed to be here."

Then why are you here, if you're not supposed to be?

"I don't know and that's why it's a bother."
