What has he got in his pocket? (An introduction)

Jun 19, 2007 21:36

A hobbit has appeared quite literally out of thin air in the main room of the mansion. Bilbo hadn't meant to arrive here. He was taking a leisurely walk, with his ring in his pocket and Sting on his belt for old time's sake, when he had seen Lobelia coming down the path. With his usual good timing he put on his ring and dove under a hedgerow. ( Read more... )

Armand tries not to make assumptions, but the very short person puzzles him. "Monsieur? Are you lost?"

((Armand likes greeting people. Anyone else you'd like to see?))

"Possibly." He doesn't sound terribly upset about it.

"I can try to help, if you'd like untangling." He hesitates, considering, and then bows. "I'm Armand St. Just."

Bilbo bows back but not very deeply since Armand is just a human and not an OMG!elf. "Bilbo Baggins at your service."

But Armand is wearing a very pretty elven-made ring on his wedding finger.

Head to one side, Armand asks, "Do you mind my asking what you are, M. Baggins? I don't recall seeing anyone like you before."

And Bilbo's still clueless enough to not categorize something as elvish at first glance.

"A hobbit. A halfling."

"Well, I'm from France," he offers by way of explaining his accent. "Do you want my help with anything? I've lived here quite a while. Years."

Curiousity takes over. "France? I've never heard of it. Where is that?"

"It's part of the continent of Europe. I'm afraid geography never was my strongest point. I could get a map from the library and show you, I suppose. Where are you from, M. Baggins?"

"Hobbiton. And I do love maps."

Armand grins, glad to have something to show. "Then maybe you'll like the library." He waves a hand in the direction he means to lead Bilbo. "It's this way."

And Bilbo grins again because knowledge is power and Bilbo loves books. "Lead on if you please."

"It's a quite a nice library, always growing. We all enjoy using it." And when they enter the library, it doesn't seem that big, but there are always shelves further back where you weren't expecting them.

Armand looks through the reference section to find an atlas. He brings the heavy, overly large book and plops it onto a table. "This is an atlas of the world." He flips it open to a map of Europe. "This is France. And this is England, where I lived for a time before coming here. Of course, the Mansion doesn't show up on the maps."

Bilbo stands eee!ing at the books until Armand comes back with the map. He studies it carefully before looking up, confused. "I'm not familiar with any of these places."

Armand turns to the dissected globe at the beginning. "This is the whole of the world, my world anyway. You can look through the whole atlas if you like."

Bilbo nods and picks it up. It's quite an armful. "I will. Thank you. Would you mind showing me to a room?"
