Light on the fannishness...

It occurs to me that some of you may have followed or friended me on the basis of shared fandom interests, and yet from my entries in the last months (even years) that's somewhat thin on the ground here. I can't remember the last time I wrote an episode reaction post or flailed over something that happened or waxed rhapsodically about a ship or a ( Read more... )

When you're surrounded by other people squealing and flailing over something you love, it heightens your own enthusiasm. It's self-fulfilling.

I think that is part of it. But I've also found it's something that waxes and wanes, though I don't know exactly why. I've been "on" again for about two years, but Before that I had a period of several years when I wasn't very fannish at all.

Well with NCIS, I'd say it's hard to maintain fangirl level enthusiasm for 13 years. Especially with Cote leaving and TPTB never giving Tony/Ziva the storyline they deserved (and now what Michael's last ep I've even more upset). I can usually only maintain being a fangirl for one show at a time and I've been at a loss since end of s2 of Rookie Blue. Nothing has really grabbed me except Blindspot but the nature of that show makes it hard for me to get into the fic for it. I'm really into Game of Thrones but I just binged 5 seasons and am new to it.

Yeah, I actually stopped watching NCIS a few years ago. I didn't fall out of love with the characters - it just as felt like it was the same old, same old, there wasn't enough development, you know? After 13+ years people change! A lot! But not on NCIS. I just found that I was bored watching it.

Yeah, the conversation is mostly on Tumblr now (where I personally find it impossible to follow).

That's how it goes, I suppose. It's a shame.

Mind you, fandom could be horrible too, and I don't miss that aspect of it.

Yeah, people talk about tumblr being scary, and while I agree that it is, they forget how awful LJ could be. Especially if you had unpopular fandom opinions, and there was a SJW bent as well. But even without the negativity on tumblr, there's no real discussion or interaction, and I liked that about LJ fandom. Also, I could friends-lock things to keep the cray-cray to a minimum, which you can't seem to do on tumblr.

(I edited out the fake rant, because I was worried it might freak you out since there's no tone on the internet.)

Tumblr, as a platform, does seem designed to make communication as difficult as possible. I'm really not sure why.

As for all the crazy stuff, some people thrive on the drama, of course, but I always hated it. I wasn't sorry when LJ calmed down a little, but of course now it's got too quiet for those of us (like me) who mostly use it for fandom stuff.

Tumblr is great for sharing art. I'm not sure why it became fandom's favorite platform.

It's a vicious cycle. I would love to be a million times more meta, but it's hard when you either find yourself ignored, or just... no one else is meta-ing, so there's no one else to bounce off of. I mean, on my end I also realize I added a lot of people when I was still really into Doctor Who. I'm still into the earlier seasons, but I pretty much gave up on it after... I don't even really remember. There were dinosaurs in Victorian England, and not even Strax, Jenny and Madame Vastra (who I love and want a spinoff of) could save the episode for me. So I know I added all these people because I was a huge Whovian, and... yeah. Not so much anymore, unless again we're talking earlier seasons ( ... )

I know, sometimes it feels like you're just talking into a void. Even though on one level these are journals, after all - your own space to air whatever you want, record your thoughts and feelings - in another sense, they are entirely about communication - and when you get nothing back, it is disheartening, it does make you wonder why you bother. Particularly when it isn't just airing your own internal dialogue, when you are actively trying to start some communication and debate, and you get nothing back...

Yeah, I think for me it's a combination of not having as much free time as I once did (since it takes me forever to write post) and not feeling as motivated to post as often because of how few people are around to comment...it is a self a fulfilling cycle as you say, and it is a shame. Tumblr just doesn't lend itself to the same discussions and privacy.
