Wow, that looks wonderful. I'm definitely saving this to memories. Now I'd like to ask a very silly questions and pray that you can help me out here: I want to start making icons, but I have no idea what software I should purchase. What do you recommend I get, preferrably within a sane spending limit?

I would definetely recommend Adobe Photoshop. The latest one is CS2 I think and it comes with ImageReady where you can do Animation. I have never tried Paint Shop Pro so I wouldn't know if it's any good but Photoshop is more popular therefore more resources are made for it. Sorry, I'm not the best person to ask as both PSP creations and PS creations look the same but if you are a beginner at Adobe Photoshop it would definately need a lot of practice to get used to.
