So...Macs will soon be PC's?

Jun 07, 2005 17:28

I just read in the Oakland press that Apple will start using Intel processors in their computers instead of Apple using their own processors. To that end, if they do what would make them better then some of the other PC's on the market? An answer given in the paper was OSX. However, if a conversion kit for OSX is made to run it on the new "PC" ( Read more... )

Sorry, I wasn't implying that the article was on the website right now. I was just trying to site my source as best I could. Seeing as how the story in in today's paper it won't be online until tomorrow or Thursday. They don't show the stuff online that is in the paper they are trying to sell today.

The chips have been interchangeable for a several years, if I remember correctly. But it's not the just the chips that make the difference. Just because the chips will work on both doesn't mean that the systems will be interchangable. The architecture is very different on the mac. I mean a dual 2.7Ghz G5 runs quite a bit faster than a dual 3.25 GHZ Xeon PC. A PC can't handle the 8GB of RAM whereas a mac can. We all think this happened for a couple of reasons. A) Apple promised 3GHZ G5's within 12 months of the G5 being introduced. It's been 18 mos and they have 2.7GHZ versions. We doubt that's Apple's fault as much as it is IBM. B) If a dual 2.7GHZ G5 runs like a dual 4GHZ Pentium. Then if Intel can make 4GHZ chips, it'll blow the speed of PC's out of the water. Though a lot of that is the architecture more than the clock speed.

It's kind of like, you can make the wheels on that Jaguar XJ8 fit onto that Ford Festiva over there, but it's not going to make it perform like a Jag.
