A Few Dear Gnomes

Dear RPers:

I have problems with the Theramore scenario, but they stem from personal reasons, not because the storyline sucks, or because I think Blizzard's going the wrong way with how they're working their game. (Except that Jaina's reaction in Tides of War was far more realistic than her reaction in the Alliance version. But that's another rant ( Read more... )

Not addressing anything else: no, don't suck it up.

Play your characters the way you want to play them. If it feels OOC, don't follow it. No, you don't have a choice about what characters you play, but I can say from the beta, this isn't addressed at all, ever, in the entirety of the available Pandaria questing or in any other scenario.

As for myself, who's been playing probably as long as you have, none of my characters are members of the Horde any more. They all went and joined the neutral factions the second Garrosh got power and Thrall got the worst case of selective amnesia ever. Similarly, virtually none of my characters are still members of the Alliance.

My characters all profess to be for the Horde and all its ends in public, but secretly want to kill Garrosh and even watch him whenever possible.

That's a thought I'll definitely keep in mind. Public lip service with private dissatisfaction sounds like a doable plan.

My mage is the daughter of a Kirin Tor member who died in Dalaran during Archimonde's attack (no one prominent, or even named), so her faction is easily set. My druid easily could appeal to the Guardians of Hyjal. My shaman's of the mindset of the Earthen Ring, and would follow Thrall, Drek'thar and Eitrigg to the ends of the earth.

My newest priest I had planned as an envoy to the trolls, which is why I went to level in Kalimdor instead of Eversong Woods. He would fall in with Vol'jin rather than his own people, even though Vol'jin's sticking with the Horde for the sake of his people.

The DK could return to the Knights of the Ebon Blade and spend some time in Northrend, keeping an eye on things up there.

The hunter's a bit harder. She likes orcs, but doesn't like Hellscream. And I think my paladin, after the A'dal debacle, would just as soon go live with the tauren Sunwalkers as remain in Silvermoon or

Yeah, this...the few Horde characters I have are hiding with neutral factions, and in the case of one particular blood elf of mine, he would defect to the Alliance in a heart beat if he thought he could, because Garrosh's actions of late frankly horrify him to the point that he thinks he has to stop him at all costs, even if it means defection.

I will suggest there's also a possibility for a lot of character-faction angst, if you're comfortable with that, whether it comes out in the open or is mostly internal. I remember doing the troll starting area and listening to Vol'jin's conversation with Garrosh where he basically said "One day, I'm gonna knife you in the back if you don't stop acting so !@$#@#$@#$@$!!" And that was cool.

I would also suggest, if you want to just run a scenario or two to have DONE it, and RP/imagine that your character wasn't there and is only impacted at arm's length? That's totally viable, too.

I think there are a lot of Alliance players feeling a little bitter about losing Theramore and Jaina going all neutral, too, which may have contributed to your friend's reaction; which does not excuse it, 'cause it sounds more than a little obnoxious.

SPOILERS BELOW DON'T READ THIS COMMENT IF YOU DON'T WANT THEM!

Obligatory spoil alert done....

Jaina doesn't go neutral. In the book, she rages hardcore. I'm disappointed that the Scenario doesn't show that, but Thrall had to stop her from decimating Orgrimmar after she takes the Focusing Iris from the mana bomb.

She doesn't just rage hardcore, she calls for freaking genocide against orcs and other Horde races and says she wants them wiped off the face of Azeroth. She tries to convince Varian to help her wipe out Orgrimmar, including the orphanage.

Yeah, she just goes off the freaking handle in response. And the whole summoning of a tidal wave with the Iris was just....

Damn.

I'm really -NOT- surprised by the reaction. Garrosh wiped out her home and killed everyone she held close. The Scenario should've had more of THAT reaction, not the neutral blah reaction she had.

Screw your friend. They're your characters. Play them how you want to play them. No one has to back the Horde or Alliance. You can RP in neutral cities, like Dalaran, or be members of neutral factions (i.e. Earthen Ring). You can be just as appalled as everyone ( ... )

Oh god, that letter. I wanted to murder him before I even played the scenario; the letter almost made me see red.

...As you can imagine, my belves are not pleased to be of the same race of this guy. Even the one that's a member of the Horde military.

What does the letter say? I don't have a Horde 85, so I haven't seen it from that side.

No need to "suck it up" Neither faction is monolithic, nether faction is all light or dark. Horde is pritty grim at the moment under the rule of Daddy didn't love me war chief, but hey how much time did A side spend under Onixyia's direct control? And how much can you realy trust king Grunty Mc Chinny Chin and a bunch of dark irons ( ... )

A lot of my questing I do OOC, or my mostly-Troll characters wind up being like, "FUCK why did I do this I hate this".

My guild, ICly, just got told by a Horde representative that they're no longer operational and their Warcaller just got arrested for speaking out against the Forsaken, refusing to follow orders while working in FOrsaken territory, and operating a mostly-illegal military unit. The unit will be taken neutral with the base being a neutral city, and the goals being to go where the money is and do the Right Thing.

Play the way you want to (within reason).
