New challenges [Mess Hall] [Open]

Mar 02, 2010 21:21

De hadn't really ventured to many places on board ship, certainly not by himself, at any rate. His time, of which there was a lot, tended to be spilt between spending time alone in his quarters, spending time with Bill and Len in the common area of their rooms, and, more recently, down in Botany, tending to and preparing his now beloved rose plot ( Read more... )

Tina was emerging somewhat from her own, more temporary and self-imposed, shyness, and was braving the mess hall despite the way that the scents of many different kinds of food sometimes seemed to trigger her morning sickness. She paused just inside the doorway and inhaled, shallowly at first, and then more deeply. So far, so good.

She grabbed a tray and loaded it up with pastries - she had an intense craving for buttery, flaky breadstuffs - and looked around for somewhere to sit. That was when she spotted De, out on his own. Huh. Well, she didn't want to make him feel like he was being nursemaided or something, but maybe he'd like to have some familiar company. She walked over to his table.

"Mind if I sit here?" she asked.

De was in the process of slicing through some gammon when he was interrupted by a voice. It was unexpected - almost hidden in the corner like this, and trying to present as unobtrusive an image as possible - De hadn't expected any company.

Looking up, he was pleased to see that he at least recognized the owner of the voice. "Tina," he said, with a small smile. "No, go ahead. How are you doing today?"

"I'm good," Tina said, taking a seat. "And better, with some company."

She smiled, and started taking apart a croissant. "How are you?"

"Oh, you know," replied De. "I was just on my way back from Botany. I thought I'd come here, try some non replicated food for a change. I've never been here to eat."

He took a bite of his food. "It's nicer. And I know that it's real. Which helps."

Spock cast a careful glance across the length of the mess hall. With the replicator in her quarters broken, the Mess Hall was her only viable option for nutrition. She, however, had no desire to eat with her mentally challenged room-mate ever again.

T'Vau did not appear to be present, though Spock did locate a familiar face.

She had never interacted with DeForest Kelley while in her nominal state. There was a strange nostalgia associated with his memory, perhaps a residual effect of her childlike state. Spock found that she desired to dine with him. As she gathered a tray of consumables, she hoped that he would be amenable to the concept.

"Greetings," Spock offered as she approached the table.

De was contemplating another, slightly larger slice of pie (pie really was good), and wondering whether he really did want to eat it, when another voice, this time attached to an unfamiliar face, approached his table.

"Umm, hello?" he said, looking up.

"May I sit with you?" Spock requested evenly.

De glanced round at the relative emptiness of the Mess Hall, before turning back to the woman. "Umm...if you want to, of course, take a seat."

His voice held a hint of confusion, but De couldn't, in good conscience, say no. He wasn't expecting anyone else, and he wasn't doing anything important. If she wanted to sit there, that was her prerogative.
