Prepping for injuries [Sickbay - open]

Jul 05, 2011 14:00

They had gotten the message that there were injuries from the away mission, but not much else. Then the comm light went on again, and M'benga learned that the CMO was one of the badly injured. Shit. "C'mon, guys, we need to get ready for lacerations and broken bones, two more serious injuries ( Read more... )

Lieutenant Massar was the first to arrive, broken leg, broken wrist. Christine had her on a biobed immediately, the medic working on her amazed by how much mud and dirt was all over her. "If all the patients look like this," she mentioned to Geoff, "we're gonna need more people."

Then Massar lifted her hand, stopping Christine from leaving. "They were prepping Doctor McCoy right before I left," the young lieutenant told her. "He was buried under some rubble, and they said that the transporters couldn't lock on him."

Her eyes got sad. "It was just so fast, Christine. It all happened so fast." Then more people began arriving, all of them covered in mud and thick sludge.

By the time someone reached Paula she was losing consciousness, the struggle to free herself from the mud taking its toll. She was aware of voices, hands freeing her from the muck, and gave a moan when they pulled her free, the motion making her injured shoulder and side throb with a fresh burst of pain.

And then the rain and cold wind disappeared, the familiar dry, cool air of the ship telling her she was back on board. She struggled to stay alert as she was put on a stretcher for the quick trip to sickbay.

They were showing up now, the ones that could walk in pairs. Geoff was looking for another osteo regen unit when a familiar face was carried into the infirmary. "Lieutenant Collins, put her over here," he directed to the orderlies, taking their scanner and linking it to the biobed.

The readings were erratic. "Okay, you're good now," he told the Paula, resting a hand on hers. But the scans were revealing some internal damage that would need more than a tricorder. "Christine, please come prep this patient for surgery."

Looking down at Paula, he took a deep breath and told her, "You've got some internal bleeding and a broken shoulder. Doctor Xin will be working on you," he added, "and when you wake up, you'll be right as rain. Any questions?"

That touch was reassuring, but that brief pause before he spoke to her made Paula hesitate before nodding, even that tiny movement requiring effort. She started to speak and coughed, trying to rid herself of the feeling that she'd swallowed half the mud that had come down over her.

Her voice was just a croak when she managed to get the words out. "Can someone let Hikaru--Lieutenant Sulu know?" They'd planned to get together later, Hikaru just as eager to hear about the mission as she had been to share everything she'd seen and done.

"Easy," he told her, holding a mask with oxygen up to her face, allowing her to breathe deeply of it. Her color wasn't looking good, and the readings coming off the biobed didn't bode well, her blood pressure dropping like a rock.

"I'll let him know," he told her, giving her a knowing smile. Looking up, he saw one of the nurses approaching him with a smaller hypospray, one used for more potent medications. M'Benga held it up for her inspection. "This is going to knock you out, okay? When you wake up, we'll have fixed everything."

Leonard was unconscious when Lt Jiminez waved over a couple others to help her get the heavier rocks off of him. Only then was the Enterprise was able to get a clear lock on him and beamed him up.

Christine was there waiting with two medics and a stretcher. Word had been that there was a head injury, and it was the CMO. She winced when she saw him, blood in his hair, on his face and shirt. It looked like someone on the ground had made a make-shift bandage, stopped the worst of it but even as they hurried over to Sickbay.

He got one look at Leonard and knew this wasn't going to be good. In the back, one of the private rooms. And get the other surgical room ready, he called out, feeling pretty certain this was going to need some precision work.

Looking around, he saw the crew moving around, medics and nurses coming in despite being off-duty and getting right to work. It occurred to Geoff that if Leonard could see this, he'd be proud. But right now, he was laying on a biobed, being cleaned and scanned and prepped for surgery.

Leonard's vital signs weren't good. The medical staff noted the swelling in his brain and worried, knowing that needed to be relieved before they could scan more deeply, looking for where the bleed was coming from.

Soon the pressure was alleviated and Doctor M'Benga was able to set his cranial scanner over Leonard and began working on sealing the small tears and fissions in the Leonard's skull.

One of the medics was standing outside the surgical room, and from where she was standing Christine could see his face was full of worry. "Something's going on. I'll be right back," she told Geoff, waiting for another nurse to take her place at M'Benga's side.

One more worried glance at Leonard and she left the room. "Yes?" she asked Ken, the young medic.

"The captain is out here," he said, a little breathless. "He wants to know what is happening, and-" Ken stared back at the door leading to surgery. "He wants to know."

Christine cursed quietly to herself. Geoff wanted to speak with the captain, she knew that, but he had his hands full right now. "Let me go talk to him," she said, following him over to where Captain Kirk was waiting.

He made it to Sickbay in record time, off at a run as soon as the lift doors opened from the bridge. The crew members he passed stayed out of his way, his expression warning them off. Jim skidded to a stop outside the double doors of the main sickbay, staring at them for a long moment.

Bones wasn't supposed to be hurt. In all the time they'd known each other, Jim could count on one hand the times he'd been sick or hurt, at least bad enough to go to the clinic. But those had still been relatively minor. He didn't know how bad this was, but going by the look on Nyota's face... it was bad enough.

Taking a deep breath, he strode through the doors, searching the occupants of the biobeds, hoping he would hear Bones growling at one of the nurses. But he was nowhere to be seen... Jim's stomach dropped. He was past the first three beds when a young medic hurried his way. Jim reached out and touched his arm, blue eyes worried and his voice quiet but authoritative. "Where can I find Doctor McCoy ( ... )

Christine headed toward the captain, seeing him standing there, trying not to look worried. "Captain," she said, stepping close. "Can I help you with anything?" she asked, not wanting to overstep her place by bringing up Leonard.

"How is he, Christine?" Jim didn't know her very well, but the name rolled off his tongue easily after listening to Bones talk about his staff. He was well aware of the glances he was getting from everywhere and didn't care. They were his crew and he was worried about them all, but for the moment he couldn't focus on anything but finding out what had happened to Bones.

She could feel the intensity coming off of him, his eyes boring into her.

"Captain," she began, but she could feel the eyes of everyone on them as well. "We should... will you come with me, to his office? We can talk in private there." Aside from the captain's reaction, which was bound to be emotional, she didn't think Leonard would appreciate everyone else knowing what was happening to him.
