I keep coming up with French and Spanish in my Italian lessons. My teacher keeps saying, "You pronounced that like French." Oops.

As for knitting, there are lots of techniques for sock knitting. I would recommend using two circular needles as being much easier than four double-pointed needles. They sell bamboo circulars, which are good for travel in the U.S. Note that Latin American airports are notorious for not allowing any knitting needles.

It's cheaper to fly into Portland and then take the train, even with overnighting in Portland.
