Update 2.41am

Looks like I'll be getting some sleep tonight after all. The RFS just pulled up outside my house in a couple of firetrucks which was a bit of a worry, but when I went out and asked them what was going on, they've come to do a proper back burn of the east and south ridge, so I'm feeling much more secure now ( Read more... )

Hopefully you will get no wind and maybe some rain!

I did get some sleep thanks, nearly eight hours, so I'm feeling much better. I woke a couple of times because of the noise of the trucks and the backburning, but only for a few seconds at a time. Once I identified the noise I dropped straight off again, so I don't feel like it was broken sleep.

I'm glad I got some, I was starting to feel a bit wiggy.

Rain would be lovely at the moment and normally we get lots of rain around now, but it's been unseasonably dry all along the coast and even up where I live, which was one of the reasons this all started. This year the winds came at the right time, but not the rain, so everything got nice and tinder dry very quickly.

The first year I moved up here, around this date, it rained for six weeks solid and it's unusual to go a week without some rain here all year round, but they're predicting some in a day or two, so let's hope they're accurate.

I'd even settle for sleet (which I hate) or snow, which can come at any time of the year here.

Thanks ML, it's been a pretty stressful few days, but I managed some sleep last night and feel much better for it. It's not terrifying once you've been through a few providing you're not in immediate danger, but more like a waiting game ( ... )

That doesn't sound fun at all. Where I'm from we have hurricanes, but not too many fires like that. It just seems so crazy to hear about all of that. I really hope you stay safe.

It's good to hear that your hamlet seems to have survived, albeit just. I don't really have the worry of bushfires anymore although back home is still a different story. Not living right in the bush helps obviously but again, you an never be too careful and our farm has gone up twice to my knowledge ( ... )

Sorry, I'll rephrase; she lives in the house I grew up in which is 100km from Melbourne, she commutes daily to Melb.
