Because all the cool kids are doing it.
Also because I came out of the finale with massive Lieutenant feels, so this meme is going to be about him.
Don't think I can't see those surprised faces.
So! Give me a prompt about the Lieutenant, AU or otherwise. The only prompts I will ignore are repeated ones, and anything about him being an ex-bender

What sparked his hatred?
Harnessing electricity.

The man wouldn't meet his eyes, and suddenly he knew.
"It's a waterbender, isn't it?" he snarled. "You got a waterbender for less than you'd have to pay me."
"It isn't that it's cheaper," the director began, but he had already turned on his heels and stalked out.

The Lieutenant looked up from his newspaper to stare at the older man. "My name," he said, "isn't Liu."
"It's a nickname," Sato explained. "Anyway, I threw a little something together for you." With great care, he placed some sort of backpack and two modified yantoks on the table.
Curious, the Lieutenant laid aside his paper and picked up one of the yantoks testing the weight. Not too far off from what he currently used. Slightly heavier, and metal. "What is this?" he asked. It was stupid to use a weapon metalbenders could affect.
Hiroshi beamed at him as he picked up the other yantok. "I thought we could give firebenders a little taste of their own medicine," he said.
Electricity crackled around the metal, stopping at the grip.
The Lieutenant sat up straighter. "Metalbenders?" he asked. Sato was no fool, surely he would have made certain...
"These are plantinum," he assured him. "Painted."
The Lieutenant smiled back at the older man. Well. These would be useful.

First thoughts on Amon - 'Freak in a mask'

"You're very talented."
He whirled towards the voice, makeshift yantoks raised defensively. The newcomer raised empty hands. "I don't intend to hurt you," he said. "I saw your fight with that... bender."
It was the masked man's tone that got his attention. The disgust simply couldn't be disguised. "Eskrima," he explained. "It requires more speed than benders are used to, especially waterbenders."
He couldn't see the stranger's face -- he stood in shadow and wore a hood. "Yes, I can see that," the man said quietly. "I could use a man with your talent."
"Why?" he asked.
"To help me start a revolution against the benders of Republic City."
"You have my undivided attention."

The young man picked himself up slowly from the crates he'd been knocked into. This was bad -- how had he managed to wander straight into Red Monsoon territory? If he didn't find a way out of here, he was going to get his ass kicked.
Unless...
His blue eyes fell on a shattered pole, and he smiled.
There were things about the San-Sü Islands that weren't widely known yet.

That companionable arm around his shoulders as Amon gestured to their new headquarters.
His desperate hug after that riot in the early days of the movement, when he'd been so convinced Amon had been killed.
The single kiss they'd shared in the heat of victory.
Was that why it hurt so much to know the truth?

- What does he do after Amon is gone?

He vaguely remembered hearing firebending, seeing the light of flames, and hearing Amon -- Noatak? -- run after the Avatar and her firebender.
He remembered wondering if his life would end in fire as well as betrayal.
But the fire was gone, seemingly in the blink of an eye.
Objectively, he knew he'd lost consciousness -- his entire body hurt, from without and within. But time had lost all meaning for him. Every time he closed his eyes, he saw Amon casually raising a hand, crushing him with bloodbending, throwing the movement to one side with his Lieutenant.
And then he had abandoned them both to die.
Suddenly, the Lieutenant heard the door swing open, followed by such an inordinate amount of clattering he wondered how many people had been rounded up to arrest him.
And then she came into view.
Of all the people in Republic City, why her? He managed a bitter smile at her. How she must love to see him like this. "Come to gloat, bender?" he asked ( ... )

He doesn't name her because he's dehumanising her -- he doesn't trust her or like her. She does have a name, but it will never come out in his POV until it clicks for him that yes, she's a person.
But right now, after Amon's betrayal, and given how much he dislikes her, he is resisting that subconsciously with everything he has.
Also it may have been fast because I'd already written this scene. >_> You just happened to have the perfect prompt for it.

The Lieutenant uses his medical knowledge to help injured Equalists.
How did the Lieutenant survive falling off the pro-bending arena?

Saw the Avatar get in close and manage to knock him off the roof of the Arena.
Beifong wouldn't reach him for several crucial seconds.
Amon spread the fingers of his left hand, taking hold of the Lieutenant and slowing his fall just enough. Using the other hand, he brought the water up to catch him, making it seem like a lucky wave.
The Lieutenant could do the rest on his own.

He's too valuable a tool to lose, huh?
