made to order, one Garden of Eden

Things were working well so far, with importing a garden into the Dark City. Daniel had found a place and did all the hard work, which was the mountain of paperwork. In the dark of the night, the soil was imported in from Harley's friend in Gotham. It was the finest soil around, which would provide plenty of stability for a future for the garden.

Rat is all too glad for the work, since what the Doc's given him, apart from helping with the paperwork to put this through, is very light. He's feeling adrift for the lack of work, so he's glad to get his hands into the dirt, literally and figuratively. He and Dr. Schreber have also drummed up plenty of advertising and business sponsorship. There will be plenty of people showing up to plant on the appointed day, and probably people like hot dog vendors and musicians like Rat showing up to take advantage of the spirit of community celebration, too.

Harley's little crush on Rat is almost completely gone by now, but there is still a soft part in her heart for him. One that will always be there, as she considers him a friend.

So when she finds an opportunity, she will wade through the crowd with April and give him a thankful hug. "Everything is working out beautifully."

Rat's clothes aren't the freshest today, but he's not the only one, since everyone's working in the dirt. He's got a badge on that says he's a 'community garden director', but it's the only thing keeping him from looking like the homeless bum that he is.
He grins and gives her a filthy hug (no not that kind of filthy!). "We've got a lot of vegetables, and a couple trees put where they won't block too much light when they get bigger. Plenty of flowers. Sunflowers even! Those are the really tall ones..." Rat's a city guy, so this is all a little new to him.

"Plus plenty of special gifts from Ivy," Harley smiled. There were going to be some very unique vegetables and fruits grown from this gardn.

"People look happy."

Schreber would not miss this if he could help it! He is even helping plant some flowers but he has to sit on a little bench to do it because he doesn't get up very easy. He is not wearing a badge, because he doesn't want to be recognized as anyone involved in planning. He's just here to plant flowers! Orwell got left at home in case he got any ideas about the seeds.

"Oc? Oc?" A small hand tugged on his pants.

"Oh! Where did you come... from?" Schreber bends down and picks April up and oh that's hard on his back! She's not heavy but he can't lift much. It's a good thing it is not far to put her in his lap. "Are you helping?" He looks over at Harley and rat and smiles.

"Oc elp?" April showed him her brand new toy shovel. Not for real digging, but dirty none the less.

[janitor_thorn]

Thorn has come along, but seems somewhat edgy in the presence of the crowds. He keeps close to the doctor, head bowed over his work. He is no stranger to groundskeeping, although he has little talent with plants. They tend not to do well after his touch, but he's been assured these are hardier than most.

Being near the doctor means every now and then, April will peak up to smile at him.

The child gets shy smiles in response, from under the brim of his cap. It may seem like a game of peek-a-bo, but the similarity is accidental.

At her age, April takes it at face value. Peek-a-boo time!

"Peek?" She covers her face with cubby hands, then throws them open. "Boo!"

[sarah_branigan]

Sarah arrives a little later, dressed casually with her hair up in a kerchief. She looks eager to help with the planting. Too bad Belle couldn't come with her, but a talking plant creature would be a bit too much for the city to handle.

Sarah will see that Harley is over with Markus, they seem to be talking about something. As for April, she is sitting on Daniel's lap and playing peek-a-boo with Thorn.

[dr_schreber]

Schreber gives her a little wave. He's sitting on a small portable bench next to Thorn, and holding April. He's already been gardening she can probably tell from smudges of dirt on his cheek and his hands. Even his glasses are a little smudged.

Sarah waves back, an amused expression on her face. April is going to be quite the heartbreaker when she grows up. "Hi, there," she smiles, approaching them. She gives April a little tickle under her chin.
