NIGHTSHIFT 52: M31-M40 Hallway

[Currently M36]Touya had thought that the last vestiges of his exhaustion due to the drain of his power had all but vanished, but apparently it had made one last stand. Touya awoke briefly when his nurse had brought in dinner, the last thing he remembered being talking with Yue in the hall ( Read more... )

Not the smell of dinner or the arrival of the smell of Darkness could jerk Riku out of his sleep. Instead, it was that announcement, that taunting sound, that made him awake up and notice the disturbed atmosphere of his room; it was clear that something was different. And that was aside from the fact that he was annoyed. Just as things started to get themselves together, he found himself sleeping-but from what he was able to process of the announcement, it wasn't for long ( ... )

Mihai had nothing particularly noteworthy to show for his day, save for an assignment from a kid with big ambitions. Not that he automatically assumed this Sora wouldn't do well because of his age. He just thought that failure would be highly likely, due to an abundance of optimism over experience. But if Mihai turned out to be wrong, it'd hardly be for the first time in his life. And he didn't have so much of an ego to back out of his commitment. So, he'd started gathering supplies not long after the doctor announced the beginning of night, having spent several moments studying the map he got from Badou first ( ... )

Dinner ended up silent, and without anything else to focus on, Battler found himself getting restless. He'd never been good with waiting, especially now that it evoked sense of helplessness. .... Too many times spent just sitting, wondering what was going to happen next, who else was going to be found dead. Of course, nothing like that was going to happen here. He knew that, but even so, the association was hard to shake. But then again, maybe it wasn't so much that as knowing where he was going. After all, even though Ange was he sister, what was their relationship right now? Nothing but a bunch of convenient lies. ...... After everything, he couldn’t even acknowledge her ( ... )

He hadn't really promised to stay in tonight, so Ritsuka had no idea why he was still sitting here in the room. He didn't really have anywhere to go and no one to go with, but that shouldn't have stopped him from doing something. It was...habit, he supposed, to wait in his room until someone came for him. He knew he should be stronger, be willing to run out and uncover the truth behind this place, but after relying on Soubi for so long, Ritsuka felt the weight of his absence twice as much ( ... )

"Nataku's former roommate in M35," Yuffie reminded herself, out of impatience rather than any real need. "Nataku. M35. M35, Nataku."

Who's the roommate? she wondered vaguely, as she kicked up into an aerial cartwheel. It would've been handy if Okita'd been able to tell her that, but-oh well. Too late now, and it wasn't too important. Yuffie just hoped that they wouldn't be jerks about handing over the stuff

Before long, she found herself skidding to a stop outside the room. No delays; good. Hopefully she'd still be able to beat Okita back to his room. "Knock knock," she called out, before rapping lightly against the door. "Anybody home?"

There was a knock at the door and Ritsuka jumped slightly, having not expected anyone for the evening. After the lights had gone crazy and Landel had...been crazy as usual, Ritsuka really hadn't thought someone would just show up at his room for no reason. Maybe they were hurt? The Clinic hadn't been here for a long time, but some people might have still thought he could help.

Peeking his head around the corner, he went to the door and opened it - just a bit - to look out at the person in the hall. Thanks to the lights being on (if dimly), he could see that it was a girl, about half a head taller than him. She wasn't wearing the usual Institute uniform though and that set Ritskua's cat ears back. The Special Counseling patients didn't travel though and they certainly didn't knock before breaking someone in half and sending them sailing, so he opened the door a little wider. "Can...I help you?"

Yuffie shuffled, trying not to stare. It was a kid. A kid with… a kid with ears. Cat ears. Cat ears that could move. "Um…" With a wrench of will, she forced herself to focus. Who cared if it was a kid and if the kid had moveable kitty ears? Nanaki was a fire-catdogwolf, and Yuffie didn't stare at him. "Sorry to bother ya," she said lightly, rocking back on her heels. Once she was over something, she was over it. "I'm here from the History Club. About Nataku's things?"

All the same, now she was really hoping that there wasn't going to be any trouble. She'd never had any trouble picking on kids (or anybody, really; a target was a target when they had something you needed-not just wanted, needed), but it wouldn't do a whole lot of good for the History Club's reputation if word got out.

The day had slid by in what amounted to uselessness. He hadn't learned much more than he already knew--and his knowledge of the layout hadn't expanded in degrees. Still, even frustrated, his mind slid back to that morning. The shift had ended before he could properly explain, but the fact that his sister's concern was so apparent was....

In the midst of dragging the pillowcase with sand in it from under his bed, he paused, staring down at the mattress. Surprising. Touching. Even now. There was nothing in him that expected that from his siblings, and still--Kankurou listened to him all too willingly when Gaara needed, and Temari continued to be there for him. His mind still touched these facts with the kind of hope that understood it could be pulled away. One could not undo expectations so easily.
