Nightshift 43: Courtyard

Sep 03, 2009 02:22

[from here]Landing in the courtyard, Yousuke immediately had his flashlight out, checking the grounds for anything that might jump right out at them. The chances of any place outside being safe enough for him and Souji to have their conversation in peace were slim, but this would at least get them away from whatever was in the yard they'd come ( Read more... )

Souji followed right behind Yousuke, a little baffled by his reactions. Huh, and here he'd thought Yousuke was a little more active... he would have teased the other young man about it, but he had other things to worry about right now, like making sure they didn't get eaten or anything. He landed as quietly as he could, then turned on his flashlight as well, the beam sweeping across the Courtyard.

...after he took a deep breath and squeezed his eyes shut to get rid of his headache, of course. After that, he kept his eyes open, wondering what sorts of creatures could even be around here. Besides crazy telepathic things.

It felt awkward trying to get back on the original topic of conversation now, but Yousuke at least wanted to know that Souji understood the main message. He made one last check over his shoulder (because you never knew when something was going to pop out at you, apparently) before getting up close and personal with his best friend again. "Just... about what I was saying - It's probably best if you don't let Adachi know you know about him, okay? We should see how he reacts just knowing you're here."

If the man thought Souji was in the dark like the others it shouldn't matter much, but it didn't hurt to be on the safe said. Souji was their leader, after all, the one that seemed to figure things out easier than Naoto at times. Adachi might have more reason to worry in their current scenario.

The courtyard seemed peaceful and quiet enough at first, the only sound a soft sigh of breeze that sent a handful of dry leaves scraping along the pathway. Then the still surface of the pond rippled gently as a woman lifted head and shoulders above the water, the long pale hair clinging to her form the only thing that hid her bare pale-blue skin from view.

She considered the pair for a moment, then reached one arm toward them in a gesture of apparent longing, opening her mouth and giving voice to wordless song. The melody was soft and yet somehow still compelling, speaking of longing and loneliness and above all, beckoning for them to come closer and join her.

Souji nodded quietly at that, still a little baffled as to why Yousuke was so hung up on Adachi of all people. Sure, he was a detective and all, but would he really care about what happened back then, when this situation was just a bit more pressing? Yes, sure, perhaps they'd done something bad, but clearly, they weren't going to be punishable under law when they were in an insane asylum. But... Yousuke found it important, and so Souji's nod was as good as his word of honor.

But then Souji heard that odd song, and as he glanced over to the pond, he saw... well, a woman. A lot of woman. And she had a beautiful voice, too... Souji found himself taking a few steps towards her, stumbling a little bit as he did so. He always was oddly susceptible to the charms of monsters, especially those that looked that attractive.

Though he had never personally heard that whine of overhead weapons, he had heard in the minds of thousands: veteran soldiers, pilots, even current soldiers on leave. It was evidence enough to get the hell out of there. He managed to scramble to the top of the wall, following after Jun before the blast hit, sending him tumbling to the ground right after his roommate to land in a contorted heap ( ... )

"I'd have saved myself these past miseries," he argued, even though it felt that safety was a luxury that had long been abandoned. Maybe it was better his heart didn't beat - he couldn't feel the increased heart rate and constricted veins that should have accompanied his pain.

It was unfortunate they couldn't just sit here in relative safety.

"I think I can." But Edward didn't move to stand immediately; even in his pain, he did need to attend the wounds. His face would be fine for the moment, but large patches of burned skin trailed up his arm and leg on his left side, the fringes of the cotton coat turned black around the edge of the angry red skin. Carefully, the vampire removed the outer patient coat, wincing when the cloth peeled away from melted skin. Luckily for him, the two layers had lessened the extent of his burns, and they were smaller than the pain would have him believe ( ... )

Well, if Giovanni wanted to refuse his hand. Grell saw the cannon readying to fire again and he flipped off the edge of the wall, landing solidly (if a bit awkwardly) on the ground below. He quickly recovered his balance, tossing his hair over his shoulder before grabbing his chainsaw. They still weren't out of the woods yet, but from here, the oppressive feel of the girl's inhumanity seemed to lessen until it was barely a mild irritation.

That didn't mean he was going to stay near the wall that she was aiming at, however. Moving quickly away, Grell cautiously called upon his powers again and the green tint came back to his eyes. Scanning the field, he noted two people by the water and...a shed. "Nfu, there you are, my little darling," he breathed out, moving forward. For the moment, Giovanni would just have to follow. Now that Grell had gotten safely across the field, he no longer had any use for the man, really. If he wanted to tag along, fine, but otherwise? It was time for Grell to go shopping.

It was a strange sensation, feeling pain that didn't lessen in instants. His palms and knees were a little scraped up from the landing, and they smarted; he looked down at them in the moonlight and marveled at the skin that hadn't healed.

"What do they have in the shed?" he asked, not looking up as he walked alongside Grell. He knew perfectly well that Grell had no use for him, and he didn't intend to offer to act as a meat shield any longer - but Giovani needed more makeshift weapons, and a garden shed seemed like the perfect place to find them. Did he mind that he might be irritating Grell? No, of course not. The thought didn't even pass his mind.

Looking at his hands at a time like this? Not too smart consideri--

KABOOM.Just as Grell had turned about to scold the man for waiting, there was a large explosion - the sort that just didn't happen everyday. Or really, shouldn't. For a moment, Grell thought the girl's cannon had destroyed the wall, but when he looked back over his shoulder, that was just fine. The Institute on the other hand? Was currently missing its roof, sending huge hulking birds up into the air. That...wasn't good ( ... )
