Nightshift 42: Main Hallway, 1-West

[from here.]Euphemia peeked out into the large hallway, swinging her flashlight in both directions. The hallway looked to end to the right of where they were coming from, and it extended out a long way to the left. It was truly eerie, looking out into such a large empty space and feeling like the only ones there, particularly when it was so dark ( Read more... )

The hybrid followed along, keeping a keen eye out for anything that moved. She was always ready for youma, and that underlying feel of youma was still tickling the back of Teresa's senses. She just couldn't pinpoint the source. She wondered if that was because of her diminished youki or if this place simply had once been a nest long abandoned.

The walls were barren and utilitarian. "I am reminded of the barracks," she commented. "I would expect there to be more than just us and one other, though." That was assuming Euphy hadn't imagined hearing footsteps.

"You were in the military?" If so, Euphy thought, that would possibly explain the sadness. She had seen it often enough on the rare occasions she was anywhere near a battlefield. The sights and sounds of war stayed with you, Cornelia had explained, and she couldn't deny that it was the truth after seeing it firsthand.

"I realize that question must have come out of nowhere. My older sister leads a regiment," she explained. "While I haven't had much occasion to see the soldiers' quarters" - an understatement if she had ever said one; it had been strictly forbidden for someone of her rank to interact more than was absolutely necessary with the soldiers - "I do agree that it reminds me of some type of military facility, or even a military hospital."

She stepped forward, shivering at the sound of her own footsteps. "You're right, though, Teresa," she said. "I'm surprised we haven't run into anyone else. It looks like the hall might fork ahead of us, though, so perhaps someone's there?"

"Something like that," Teresa confirmed, if vaguely, a small smile on her lips. "I don't suppose you've ever heard of the Organization or something called Claymores?" Teresa was never particularly fond of the Claymore name the common people had given the hybrids; she much preferred Silver-Eyed Witch. It was more fitting for the monsters created by humans to fight monsters.

Looking down the indicated hallway, Teresa nodded and gestured for the girl to continue on. She'd never been in the Organization's hospital area beyond the few days needed to recover and adapt from the infusion process. She'd simply had no need for treatment and she preferred to not think about those days where her dark beautiful hair had turned blonde before her very eyes.

"I'm afraid I haven't," she said, stepping forward to the next part of the hall.

[From here -- edited to make a much-needed time skip more logical]

As von Karma approached the intersection, he turned left, passing the stairs. As soon as he had retrieved his daughter's file, he planned to return to them.

He continued east down the hallway, still finding nothing and no one around. Most disquieting...

In this hallway there usually was an amount of patients around. But now, it was completely devoid of life. Surely, he couldn't have been this early?

It was suspicious, only somewhat confirming that something wasn't quite right...

Gazing up at the long staircase, von Karma took a few deep breaths, summoning up as much energy as he would need to climb it. Instead of admitting to Scar that he was uncertain whether the monsters were capable of climbing stairs, he merely answered gruffly, "The more time we waste pondering what these monsters are able to do, the more time we grant them to catch up to us, Mr. Scar. Let's move, now!"

"Cornering prey is the most effective way to catch it." Scar answered between the gasps that came with catching his breath. Not to say that these creatures were able to think of such a strategy (they seemed rather mindless, driven by mere hunger), but he didn't wish to lend them a hand by getting themselves stuck on the second floor with no way out. But, as he realized when he dared looking behind him, there was no time for any alternatives.

Alkaid's angry footsteps echoed in the hallway as she marched. Gosh, the nerve of people these days! Riding off of her expertise all the way until she died! She had half a mind to turn around and bite that Venom guy, 'cause even though he looked so tasty...

No! Argh! Even if she was gonna die, she wasn't going to think stuff like that zombie-think!! Definitely not!

Even though a noob probably wouldn't be delicious at all. Uppity noobs had always been the worst kind of noobs. Even when Alkaid was dying and she felt like her arm was going to fall off and rot any minute now, she could still yell at a noob with the best of them.

There was no one else here. Still. She thought she'd heard people earlier, but any sign of life was long gone by now..

The Vulcan was unfamiliar with the precise definition of noob, but Alkaid's tone indicated that it wasn't flattering. Although he could certainly understand how receiving a lecture from one who was less experienced could be perceived as disrespectful (as it often was; he knew from experience), flinging insults now, of all times, was certainly inappropriate and counterproductive ( ... )

That was much better. He hadn't exactly planned for her to continue making this much noise as they moved on (nor... the strangle insult that he couldn't begin to fathom the meaning to. He knew it was an insult from her tone of voice but, really, she could have said anything in that voice and he would know it was meant to be rude. Maybe she was just making words up? Was her rage at his treatment of her that palpable that she needed to create new words to express her displeasure? He didn't know. What he did know, however, was that, if she did not like him now, she would despise seeing him on the job), but at least she was leading the way like she should have been from the beginning. If he felt any guilt from prodding those wounds of hers in order to get some fight out of her or hurt by the implication that he didn't matter, he wasn't showing it in the least.

He knew his place. He was nothing in himself, he knew that, but he did have meaning. In keeping Master Zato's memory alive, he would always have meaning ( ... )

Yeah, they were damn lucky that Alkaid had deigned to help them out with the last of her living strength. When she was some mindless zombie trying to eat their brains out, Venom might have wondered why he hadn't been nicer to her. At least he was keeping his mouth shut now.

She hadn't even thought about keeping the information about the doctors' offices to herself. 'Cause even if she was really mad, she did kind of like Spock, and wanted him to find the doctors' offices even if she became mindless.

It looked like there was a little bit of activity up ahead. Was this where the rest of the patients were gathering? It sounded kind of like, uh, zombies, though.

When Mr. Spock suggested she be quieter, she had half a mind to turn around and tell him to shut his own damn trap if he was so worried about monsters. Wasn't it, like, scientific and 'logical' that higher frequencies didn't carry as far as low frequencies? She should be fine. She was justified ( ... )
