Nightshift 42: Main Hallway, 1-West

[from here.]Euphemia peeked out into the large hallway, swinging her flashlight in both directions. The hallway looked to end to the right of where they were coming from, and it extended out a long way to the left. It was truly eerie, looking out into such a large empty space and feeling like the only ones there, particularly when it was so dark ( Read more... )

The Vulcan was unfamiliar with the precise definition of noob, but Alkaid's tone indicated that it wasn't flattering. Although he could certainly understand how receiving a lecture from one who was less experienced could be perceived as disrespectful (as it often was; he knew from experience), flinging insults now, of all times, was certainly inappropriate and counterproductive.

He was about to say as much, but Alkaid had started down the hallway, and Spock was forced to pick up his own bat again and follow after. Venom had offered for her to stay behind, but the truth remained that Alkaid was the one more experienced with this facility than either of them. It was best that she had agreed to accompany them, not only for their sake, but her own as well. "Safety in numbers" was a principle with many merits, after all.

Spock personally would have used the information regarding how to locate the doctors' offices as leverage, particularly if he had been concerned about the possibility of getting attacked with a bat again. It was obvious Alkaid had allowed her anger to cloud her better judgment, however, which was further demonstrated by how loudly she was walking down the hallway.

As they passed by a set of doors that Spock assumed to be the "sun room hall" Alkaid had mentioned earlier, he fell into stride next to the Human, although in a much quieter fashion.

"I suggest reducing your noise level," he murmured. "Risking another encounter with any sort of creature that may be in the area is unwise." That went especially so when one considered Alkaid's condition, as well as the fact that Spock was still unsure of how his own body would react to the pathogens he'd undoubtedly been exposed to when she'd bitten him.

That was much better. He hadn't exactly planned for her to continue making this much noise as they moved on (nor... the strangle insult that he couldn't begin to fathom the meaning to. He knew it was an insult from her tone of voice but, really, she could have said anything in that voice and he would know it was meant to be rude. Maybe she was just making words up? Was her rage at his treatment of her that palpable that she needed to create new words to express her displeasure? He didn't know. What he did know, however, was that, if she did not like him now, she would despise seeing him on the job), but at least she was leading the way like she should have been from the beginning. If he felt any guilt from prodding those wounds of hers in order to get some fight out of her or hurt by the implication that he didn't matter, he wasn't showing it in the least.

He knew his place. He was nothing in himself, he knew that, but he did have meaning. In keeping Master Zato's memory alive, he would always have meaning.

Venom said nothing as the three of them walked, only continuing to light their way. He had done enough for the moment--Spock could be more agreeable with the girl if it meant she would quiet herself.

Yeah, they were damn lucky that Alkaid had deigned to help them out with the last of her living strength. When she was some mindless zombie trying to eat their brains out, Venom might have wondered why he hadn't been nicer to her. At least he was keeping his mouth shut now.

She hadn't even thought about keeping the information about the doctors' offices to herself. 'Cause even if she was really mad, she did kind of like Spock, and wanted him to find the doctors' offices even if she became mindless.

It looked like there was a little bit of activity up ahead. Was this where the rest of the patients were gathering? It sounded kind of like, uh, zombies, though.

When Mr. Spock suggested she be quieter, she had half a mind to turn around and tell him to shut his own damn trap if he was so worried about monsters. Wasn't it, like, scientific and 'logical' that higher frequencies didn't carry as far as low frequencies? She should be fine. She was justified.

Even so, she turned around with a lowered voice, a harsh whisper. "We're gonna have to pass by whatever's up there whether we like it or not. You gotta prepare to run!!" Surprisingly enough, she winked, then sped up to a sprint.
