Nightshift 41: M11-M20 Hallway

May 30, 2009 16:51

Endrance sighed just slightly as he got his things together. Those injuries from the night before were still there, and he knew he would need to be careful if they should run into something unexpected that night. With any luck, any exploring they did wouldn't require fighting, but he knew now to be on his toes and prepared for anything that could ( Read more... )

Dinner had passed quietly. When Tanaka had failed to appear, Javert had inquired about his roommate to the nurse when she'd come to collect the dishes. Apparently Mr. Soto was in the medical wing - news that he received with a barely concealed laugh. Yet another one fallen ill, he thought, darkly amused by the idea of it. Well. We'll see about that.

Rising as the door shut behind her, he dressed quickly. The doors would be unlocking soon and Taylor would be along shortly. Tonight there would be experimental sessions; there would be more rooms to search and, with luck, he'd be one step closer to figuring out what went on this place.

Locating the last battery in his drawer, he clumsily switched it with the dead one in his flashlight, feeling ridiculously proud of himself for remembering how. Then he sat back and waited, leaving the flashlight off for now.

T-minus twenty and counting... Houston, we have liftoff. Or M14. His eyes had grown accustomed to the low light enough to confirm it.

S.T. rapped the door with the back of his knuckles in a double-time rendition of shave-and-a-haircut.

That had been surprisingly fast - assuming, of course, it was Taylor. Javert leaned over and grabbed both the pillowcase full of drugs and his saber before answering the door. Paranoid of him, perhaps, and he rather doubted most creatures here had the courtesy to knock, but it never hurt to be cautious.

"Evening, S.T.," he said, and held out the pillowcase. "Here's what you were after. Were you planning on heading up tonight?"

"Thanks." He knelt down and opened the toolbox. The t-shirt was spread along the bottom, muffling sound. Then he opened the mouth of the pillowcase over it and let bottles and needles cascade in a gentle plume into the box. "Here you go," he added, holding the pillowcase back out.

"Not sure yet. I put up a note for someone who was coordinating efforts, but I didn't hear back. I'd like to talk to anyone taking one of these kits up. Some of this stuff can really do a number on you if taken willy-nilly."

S.T. shifted from one foot to the other. He didn't like admitting hesitation or anything remotely resembling cowardice. Even when the other man had flinched as well and would know exactly what he meant. Did it take more balls or less to admit fear? Whatever. "And I'm not sure I want to go up there tonight. Maybe I'll head to the bottom of the stairs and see if someone else wants to round up the troops."

Yue had grown increasingly agitated as he waited for night to arrive, and as soon as the intercom clicked on the second time he was on his feet and ready. The message itself he only peripherally noted, his attention fixed on something more immediate to him than Landel and his insane mind games - he had to go. He had to get Touya and find Sakura immediately; what if she grew tired of waiting and decided to leave on her own, or what if there was another attacker in the block of rooms?

He grabbed his flashlight with unaccustomed haste, tucking his folded pillowcase in the waistband of his pants just in case it might be needed, and had his hand on the latch almost before it unlocked. With barely a glance back at Ken, and an almost stern admonition to "be careful," the guardian was out the door and gone. There was no time to waste.

The later it got, the more anxious Klavier became. And unlike the majority of the patient population, it had little to do with the approach of Nightshift itself. He was far too restless to sit still for even a moment, and hadn't even been able to stomach much of the food he was given.

Normally, he would worry about coming off as rude to his roommate, but Endrance seemed fairly occupied on his own. Despite the injuries, Endrance seemed far more animated than usual, leaving the room almost the instant the doors unlocked. It was a bit of a relief to know he wouldn't have to worry too much about the other's well being. He had far too much on his mind already.

...No. That wasn't true. And that was exactly the problem. He was fully aware Kristoph would be coming here, most likely displeased. Not that Klavier could blame him. It was actually staggering to consider the list of foul ups on his end. He was being far, far too careless. That was dangerous here. Not to mention unforgivable ( ... )

[From here.]So how did one go about properly punishing a renegade sibling? Kristoph had several ideas--all personally crafted to fit Klavier's trigger for apprehension and discomfort--but it didn't feel adequate. Torturing someone for ruining even the smallest shred of dignity was not enough; the man wouldn't feel vindicated until what wrongs were completely eradicated. Dear Mr. 'Smith' and Mr. Wright fell into this category and so, unfortunately, did his little brother ( ... )

Come on now. Let's think about this a little objectively. Mistakes were unacceptable, yes, but one could never say they were made in vain. He had only to learn from his errors. Besides, this was both a situation and environment he was completely unaccustomed to. Though he liked to believe his adaptability was much better than this, in the end, slip ups here and there were inevitable, perhaps. As for the mess on the bulletin board... That he was still unsure about. How to clean that up was still a bit of an issue ( ... )

Kristoph stared back, his expression and mind equally blank. Then, piece-by-piece, the sentiments and logic returned, and the man smiled in complete amusement. His brother looked a tad stressed. Perfect. "Good evening," he greeted. "You appear...surprised by my presence. Am I--" A pause, as if considering his options. "--intruding?"

Adachi was still kind of confused about his roommate. Shinigami weren't really real...were they? There was that whole TV thing that sounded way crazier, but even so...maybe he could ask about it later tonight. Seemed like they were going to be locked in--

Then the intercom guy decided he wanted to completely change his attitude, and Adachi heard the door unlock. A game, huh? He wasn't too sure he liked games when he wasn't the one pulling the strings, but it gave him an excuse to look around. Maybe head over to where Shirogane's room was to keep an eye on them, and make sure Hanamura didn't say anything he wasn't supposed to. F15, huh...

Adachi poked his head out the door and glanced around before stepping out into the hallway. Seemed harmless enough. It gave off that creepy haunted house something's-going-to-jump-out-at-you vibe, but the detective had training; he could handle himself in a fight. He hoped. So long as he didn't run into any cabbage monsters or weird shit like that.

She reached Gin's room without mishap and stood outside for a moment, gathering her composure. He'd pick up on her frustration and anger easily enough, she knew that, but she preferred to at least pretend that sh was calm. She knocked on the door gently. "Gin. it's me."

Gin waved as his roommate left, not bothering to offer any of the weapons or supplies he'd kept hidden in their now shared room. When he left, Gin busied himself with getting dressed and hiding some of the weapons away in less obvious places. Adachi didn't look like the brightest man, but Gin didn't like taking stupid chances. He took what he needed though, tying the sword to his side and tucking a couple of the smaller knives he'd wrapped cloth around into his sleeve.

There was a knock on the door and he didn't have to look to know who it was. He picked up his light and moved to answer it, opening the door wide. It was obvious enough that she was upset, but if he could tell, it didn't show. He had his own things to keep hidden.

"All set?"

"Another time, Mr. Landel." It was said plainly enough as X pulled his boots on, the words feeling heavier than the leather. He? The Gambler of Fate? Rejecting a game? There was something inherently wrong with that, what with him always having the time to spare for a game. Such a rotten turn of events this was.

Without having said a single word to Mr. Grants, Luxord was out the door, shuffling his cards between his hands with his hood up. It was time to return a favor, after all.
