Nightshift 41: M11-M20 Hallway

May 30, 2009 16:51

Endrance sighed just slightly as he got his things together. Those injuries from the night before were still there, and he knew he would need to be careful if they should run into something unexpected that night. With any luck, any exploring they did wouldn't require fighting, but he knew now to be on his toes and prepared for anything that could ( Read more... )

The later it got, the more anxious Klavier became. And unlike the majority of the patient population, it had little to do with the approach of Nightshift itself. He was far too restless to sit still for even a moment, and hadn't even been able to stomach much of the food he was given.

Normally, he would worry about coming off as rude to his roommate, but Endrance seemed fairly occupied on his own. Despite the injuries, Endrance seemed far more animated than usual, leaving the room almost the instant the doors unlocked. It was a bit of a relief to know he wouldn't have to worry too much about the other's well being. He had far too much on his mind already.

...No. That wasn't true. And that was exactly the problem. He was fully aware Kristoph would be coming here, most likely displeased. Not that Klavier could blame him. It was actually staggering to consider the list of foul ups on his end. He was being far, far too careless. That was dangerous here. Not to mention unforgivable ( ... )

[From here.]So how did one go about properly punishing a renegade sibling? Kristoph had several ideas--all personally crafted to fit Klavier's trigger for apprehension and discomfort--but it didn't feel adequate. Torturing someone for ruining even the smallest shred of dignity was not enough; the man wouldn't feel vindicated until what wrongs were completely eradicated. Dear Mr. 'Smith' and Mr. Wright fell into this category and so, unfortunately, did his little brother ( ... )

Come on now. Let's think about this a little objectively. Mistakes were unacceptable, yes, but one could never say they were made in vain. He had only to learn from his errors. Besides, this was both a situation and environment he was completely unaccustomed to. Though he liked to believe his adaptability was much better than this, in the end, slip ups here and there were inevitable, perhaps. As for the mess on the bulletin board... That he was still unsure about. How to clean that up was still a bit of an issue ( ... )

Kristoph stared back, his expression and mind equally blank. Then, piece-by-piece, the sentiments and logic returned, and the man smiled in complete amusement. His brother looked a tad stressed. Perfect. "Good evening," he greeted. "You appear...surprised by my presence. Am I--" A pause, as if considering his options. "--intruding?"

His mind clicked as soon as his brother smiled. And then a huge wave of guilt hit him. Why was he such an idiot? Come on. This was Kristoph, his brother. As much as he felt he'd let the other down, as much as he feared how he might have offended him, that was no reason to be so rude. To lose his manners. This was family, after all. More than that, this was family he normally wouldn't be able to converse with like this back home. At least, not anymore. And just look at how he was behaving ( ... )

Poor boy. So hopelessly naive. Although, keeping up the pleasant demeanor might ultimately work to Kristoph's advantage. He supposed he would have to see. "Thank you," he returned, gliding past Klavier to take a seat at the young man's bed. It was becoming a familiar place as of late.

He glanced up at his brother--senses alert--and blankly watched. There was that tinge of sped nerves and tense muscles; Klavier was more than a little nervous at the moment. It did not take much to know exactly why.

"I am perfectly fine," replied Kristoph, his tone indicated that, yes, the words were true. "Perhaps a bit... Hm. Never mind." A shrug.

As Kristoph took his seat, Klavier idly distracted himself by pulling the chair from its spot at the desk. He placed it alongside the desk, perfectly parallel, so he would be at a comfortable enough distance for conversation. Call him paranoid, but he may need to seated to keep his mind grounded.

However, he had yet to actually sit down. Klavier looked up after placing the chair, fairly thrown off by the statement. Or more the cutoff. What? What 'nevermind?'

"...Perhaps a bit what?"

Already, the payoff was worth the initial plunge. "Oh, you know." Kristoph dismissively waved a hand, as if the comment should have been both obvious and ridiculous to question. The smile etched further into the man's face. "Complications."

Blue eyes literally bore into their mirror as Kristoph held his tongue for one glorious pause. Give the child enough time to form the assumptions, feel the pressure of his gaze, and second guess himself in a fashion that would make acute paranoia seem a bout of nervousness. Oh, he truly loved his brother.

Finally, he canted his head to one side. "They would not provide me an hour's time with the emery board. It was dreadful."

Klavier completely froze at the look, the word 'complications' seeming to almost reverberate with a particular harshness. Or maybe that was just his own perception. Complications... it was such a vague statement, but that gaze couldn't have made the subject matter more specific even if Kristoph had tried.

His recent bout of behavior. Clearly, he had underestimated his brother's opinion on the matter. Klavier was being entirely selfish. The problem with today hadn't so much been that he had been messing up... It was that he had been messing up in ways that targeted and harmed his brother. Harmed being subjective, of course. The cutting remarks on the bulletin board, his idiotic display in the courtyard, and his own lack of general progress due to poor focus. It all fell on him. All because he couldn't so much as THINK before acting.

That moment seemed to stretch on forever. And Klavier simply waited, waited, for him to just come out and say whatever it was he wanted to say. That he was careless. That he was being an idiot. Something ( ... )

If Klavier hoped for reprieve, Kristoph was not willing to offer it. His brother required every ounce of just due in store; being merciful now was to delay the inevitable. Why put off what he could do at this moment?

Or perhaps Kristoph just liked the idea of watching the younger Gavin squirm for as long as humanly possible. The man couldn't decide.

He purposely appeared surprised by the trailing of words, before twisting his lips into an apologetic smile. "Oh, my apologies." A hand waved over the his face. "I should not bring personal matters for what is strictly a business affair. Shall we begin, then?"

He was trying to think of exactly what it was he should be saying when Kristoph spoke. His train of thought faded entirely and he was left with a look of surprise which mirrored that of his brother's for just a moment. What? Strictly... No! That wasn't what he had been trying to get at at all. He was drifting from careless to simply rude now. The last thing he wanted was to make it seem like he didn't want to talk to the elder unless business was involved ( ... )

What in the world was Klavier trying to say? Kristoph "hadn't" a clue. "No?" The man frowned, feigning concern. This should hopefully force the younger to open up a bit. He could not get the exact results without some material to work with, after all. "What ever do you mean, Klavier?"

The answer he received was rather lacking at best. And predictable. Klavier once again avoided the matter in what Kristoph assumed to be a bout of guilt. He was likely right: the boy apparently enjoyed blaming himself in his free time. Fine, he could deal with this. "You are beginning to worry me," the man stated, blandly. "What is on your mind? Have I spoken out of turn?"

A quick blink was the only hint of surprise he offered in response. Worry? Was Klavier really that off, it warranted concern on Kristoph's part? Apprehension or no, that was just ridiculous and unacceptable. If he could help it at all, the prosecutor would have absolutely none of that. Besides, the feeling was absolutely unnecessary. Kristoph had been nothing but amiable since entering the room and showed no signs of having been bothered by anything. Not really, anyhow. Klavier was just letting his paranoia take hold, and he really should have known better than to allow that ( ... )

For a quarter of a second, Kristoph contemplated dropping his mask and carrying out his intended purpose. He soon brushed the thought aside. There existed a mismatch in timing and flow, and if one fact existed regarding the man's tastes, he enjoyed the perfect entrance. Now was hardly right for bringing up his true thoughts on the matter.

So he opted to play along. "I'm not sure what you mean by 'unwarranted' behavior," Kristoph began, now purposely shifting his tone to confusion, "but there is no need for an apology." As if an apology was sufficient. "If you are fine, perhaps we can begin our business for the night."

He paused and looked over at the other man. "What is the name they've given you?"

Now Klavier was the one confused. Could it be he was the only one who thought today had been nothing but a series of foul ups? Could Kristoph have not actually found anything wrong with Klavier's sudden physical assault earlier in the day? Maybe he hadn't interrupted anything after all. Furthermore, did that mean Kristoph held no ill feelings regarding a public discussion on unpleasant matters as well? Had he really been reading too much into absolutely everything ( ... )

Gilmour, yes. He had heard that name when a nurse caught wind of Klavier's 'enthusiasm' and dragged the unfortunate creature away. Considering the circumstances during that time, Kristoph hadn't had a chance to realize exactly how out of place that name was for his brother. Until now, at any rate.

"Yes." The elder forced an amused smirk. "Bruno Godfrey. A rather peculiar selection. Although..." The pleasant expression quickly faded. "They called you differently the last time you were here."

A bait. If Klavier was clever, he would dismiss the words as a matter of illusion. If not, well, Kristoph would not be held responsible for what occurred next.
